A Tunbridge Ware satinwood book stand, the hinged sides with tesserae mosaic flowers and leaves, one side with butterfly, (for similar see Margaret Gill's 'Tunbridge Ware' page 28) and the other side with a view of a ruin of an abbey, raised on a rectangular plinth with bobbin turned edges and carved square feet, 45cm x 27cm CONDITION REPORT: Butterfly hinged end - 1/3 of the body has been filled in and painted in areas. Replacement veneer (not satinwood) to the area around the handle. Satinwood veneer has been re-glued in places with evidence of glue around the edges. There is also some splitting to the satinwood veneer. Ruin hinged end - Sections lacking and filled in comprised of: Along the bottom, to the the right hand side of the ruin and small areas around the edge. Glue spot near to the largest window. Hinges fixed having been broken and wood split. Replacement veneer (not satinwood) to the right hand side of the ruin and along the bottom. Section of replacement veneer (not satinwood) to the back of the panel. Some splitting to the satinwood veneer. Glue around the edge of the satinwood veneer indicates other repair work. Front hinged panel - Mosaic in good order. General dents and scratches. Remainder - Satinwood veneer has a section replaced (not satinwood) in one corner. Veneer with chip to two other corners and a small section lacking along the side. General scratches and quite dirty, One of the bobbin sections has a piece broken off. One of the feet has a piece broken off. Glue around the base indicates additional repair work.

Some losses to edged extremities of marble, particularly lower edge. Vertical shrinkage split to right hand side panel of bedside panel. Small loss to lower raised edge on back right hand table leg. Both stand well.

Edward Preston & Sons of Birmingham; a rose wood and dovetailed steel panel plane with 2.5" blade and brass screw, stamped 'EDWD PRESTON & SONS, B'HAM, ENG, EP TRADE MARK', length 34.5cm. CONDITION REPORT: Rosewood in good condition and good colour, front handle has two tiny old dints, front wooden edge dented by use. Metal wall pitted commensurate with use. Some very minor rusting on lower edge rim where base plate is dovetailed to sides. Plenty of useable blade remains, Blade and metal mount stamped Preston, steel to front of blade stamped Warranted Steel. Postage within UK is a medium box at £18 plus VAT.

This festival is almost unknown in the East. On the other hand the Russian Church has always celebrated the Protection of the Mother of God with particular solemnity. Several churches in Russia are dedicated to the "Pokrov".
