An important mid 19th century Chinese hand embroidered silk panel understand to be removed from the Imperial Summer Palace, Peking during its destruction in 1860 , W. 97cm, H. 96cm. Small areas are incomplete. Prov. Sitwell Estate, Barmoor Castle, Northumberland. Est. £6,000 - 8,000. The screen was a gift from Sir John William Campbell to Lt. Col. C.G.H. Sitwell of Barmoor Castle when he married Amy Elizabeth Barrington Cooke in 1887. Campbell served in the China Campaign of 1860 and was present at the destruction and looting of the Imperial Summer Palace. The silk panel remains un-finsihed with small areas visible as an outline with characters inked in to indicate what colour to use. The silk panel was later mounted into an oriental style wooden screen, probably at the time it was given as a wedding gift. Campbell and Sitwell served together in the Afghan War of 1879-80, Sitwell being in the Kuran Division. The screen remained at Barmoor Castle until it's sale and was then kept by Mary Sitwell until her death. It has come to auction directly from the beneficiary.
