A NORTHERN ITALIAN SLANT FRONT IVORY INLAID WALNUT DESK18th CenturyThe desk features an all over inlaid vine and floral pattern comprised of pewter and ivory. In addition the plank top is adorned with a reserve of a carved ivory lion with the tail of a bull in its mouth. The slant front panel is adorned with arched inlaid reserves of the hunter and his game, the flutist and the poet ; it opens to reveal four drawers and a sliding panel with cavity below. The serpentine front of the cabinet houses three locking drawers with iron hardware and escutcheons, each with a whimsical inlaid scene of rabbits and squirrels among vines and flowers. The side panels each feature an arched reserve depicting the hunter and the poet. Raised on ebonized molding and squashed bun feet.Condition: Restorations to ivory inlay. Repair to pewter inlay. The temple and ladies are comprised of inlaid Mother of Pearl and bone in various colors set into black lacquer panels. The reverse side is adorned with hand painted gold bamboo and foliate designs.Condition: Chips to lacquer around feet and along edges. One panel includes an enameled clock face with Arabic numerals and hand painted floral swags. The clock is supported by a larger porcelain deep blue glazed base with raised gilt decoration creating demilune frames of hand painted pairs of maidens. Raised on gilt bronze bun feet. A GOOD FRENCH PROVINCIAL CHERRY TWO PART SLANT FRONT SECRETAIRELate 18th CenturyThe serpentine cornice is supported by a rectilinear body of doweled construction and houses a pair of locking doors with shaped glass panels and lower square glass plate; the doors feature full length iron hinges and cut steel escutcheons. The interior is later upholstered and electrified. The slant front desk supports the bibliotheque with a locking slant front panel which opens to reveal a tooled tobacco colored leather writing surface, four drawers, 2 cubbies and a horizontal sliding panel. All supported by an “en arbalette” shaped apron and delicate cabriole legs.Condition: Very warm patina. Includes key.
