Theodor Baierl (German, 1881-1932) St John the Baptist signed lower right 'Theodor Baierl' oil on panel with cradle stretcher in original Aedicula gilt frame with Renaissance style decoration, and label verso 80 x 39cm Provenance The Reverend Francis Swithinbank, Vicar of Clare, Suffolk, for over 60 years, who obtained the painting from a Fellow Clergyman during a visit to Munich, and subsequent descent within the family after his death in 1962. Exhibited 'Muenchener Kunstausstellung im Glaspalast' Munich Art Exhibition, Crystal Palace, Munich, 1930 (old label on the reverse refers ) Theodor Baierl, prior to the first world war, received regular Church commissions for frescoes or altar paintings including Stations of the Cross. Baierl studied at the Munich Academy under Franz von Stuck and was a patron of the Munich Secession. This painting clearly shows how he was influenced by the Quattrocento - the landscape is painted in the Italianate style and the figure of Saint John is depicted in the traditional Renaissance 'serpentine' form.

The moulded top above an arcaded door carved with foliate embellishments and framing an inlaid central panel of interlaced geometric bands headed by the initials TS within a lozenge. The interior fitted with two spice drawers and shelves, 17 ins (43 cms) wide, 9½ ins (24 cms) deep and 24½ ins (62 cms) high.

A Late 17th Century Joined Oak Back Stool attributed to South Lancashire/North Cheshire. The pierced scrolling cresting rail above a single back panel carved with a lozenge motif projecting demi-lunes from the sides with chip carved trefoil terminals. The plain upright supports capped with pyramid finials. The planked seat on run-moulded rails joining column turned legs with peripheral stretchers.
A Good 19th Century Oak Livery Cupboard in the 17th Century Style. The top frieze having carved edge moulding and a band of chevron inlay resting on bulbous cup & cover posts enriched with foliate carving and overhanging a cupboard with panelled front door and canted sides decorated with further inlay. The lower section having a moulded top above a deep frieze drawer carved with four figure-of-eight guilloche knots encircling carved flower-heads framed by inlay, on foliate carved front posts and a triple panel back leading down to a pot shelf and base rail on arabesque strap-work with squat bun feet, 47 ins (120 cms) wide, 22 ins (56 cms) deep and 62½ ins (159 cms) high.
A 16th Century Romayne Panelled Coffer. The plank top having chip carved side edges. The front carved with four carved Romayne panels flanked by run-moulded muntins. Each panel depicting a head & shoulder profile portrait within a foliate roundel with floral corner motifs & various scrolling cartouche surmounts. Standing on bracketed stile feet 29 ins (73½ cms) high, 65½ ins (166.5 cms) wide, 20 ins (51 cms) deep.
An English Oak Mid 17th Century Livery Cupboard. The twin plank top above a carved frieze of foliated C-scrolls and two ventilated cupboard doors flanking a central fielded panel; each deeply carved with a cruciform motif of leaves incorporating drilled perforations to the doors within incised bordering bands and chip-carved frames. The sides enriched with palmate carving above turned columns leading down to a pot board below, 53 ins (135 cms) wide, 17½ ins (44.5 cms) deep and 47 ins (122 cms) tall.

An Early 18th Century Joined Oak Cupboard in two sections. The upper section having a moulded cornice above two cupboard doors; each door divided into three panels; two with geometric mouldings sandwiching a ventilated central panel fretted with linked C-scrolls and backed in fabric; the framework embellished in ovolu bosses and split spindle appliqués. The base section with two geometric moulded frieze drawers and doors raised on bracket feet, 40½ ins (103 cms) wide, 16½ ins (42 cms) deep and 73½ ins (186 cms) high.

The moulded top above a diagonally grained mahogany veneered frieze inlaid with a band of stringing, and two twin panel door with a bone shield shaped escutcheon, enclosing shaped shelves & internal drawers. The principle back panel enriched with a mass of lavishly scrolling acanthus with putti perched amongst the leaves flanking a central urn and cartouche dated 1595. The flat moulded arms with voluted ends resting on silhouette cut block supports leading down to a box form seat with lift-up lid and fielded twin-panel front, 30 ins (76 cms) wide, 84 ins (213 cms) in height.

A Fine Early Georgian Walnut Armchair of generous proportions. The back covered in needle-work tapestry depicting a scrolling foliate cartouche bordering a panel of birds. The elegantly sweeping scroll knop arms raised on curved supports leading down to the wide upholstered seat with velvet clad swab cushion. The cabriole legs connected by turned H-form stretchers and terminating on pad feet, 42 ins (107 cms) high, 32 ins (81 cms) wide and 23 ins (58 cms) deep.
A 17th Century & Later Joined Oak Full Tester Bed. The panelled tester within a moulded framework resting on a panelled headboard and turned foot posts leading down to a triple panel footboard and rails drilled with rope holes. The headboard enriched with a frieze of foliated lunettes centred by a daisywheel above four upper panels of carved flowering plant pots and lozenges embellished with punch-work and four plain base panels below.
A 17th Century Joined Oak Upholstered Stool. The 18th Century needlework tapestry depicting a central landscape panel with an outer borer of scrolling foliage. The run moulded side rails between the tall turned column legs joined by block stretchers and terminating on turned bun feet. 22 ins (56 cms) high, 20 ins (51 cms) x 15½ ins (39½ cms).
