Provenance:A gift from the artist Born in Liverpool, McKenzie attended the Liverpool College of Art between 1946-1950. His first move to Cornwall was in 1951. In 1953 he moved to Newlyn and Penzance where he taught at the art school until 1964. He was exhibiting at St Ives, Newlyn, London and New York at this time. For the next 20 years he was head of the Department of Fine Art at the Plymouth College of Art and Design. In 1984 he moved in retirement back to Penzance. His sculptural and sensuous style in architectural and geometric formats enhance the landscape and skylines he loved and studied

Willem Bastiaan Tholen (1860-1931) was born in Amsterdam, and became a painter, draughtsman and printmaker. From an artistic family he entered The Amsterdam Academy and went on to study in Delft in 1878. He studied with Jan and Tholen Voerman and worked en plein air for many summers in Kampen and Giehoom. From 1887 he lived in The Hague and became friends with the painters of The Hague School. In 1901 he had a boat built in which he made trips over the next 15 years along the rivers of the Netherlands and the coast of Zuiderzee.
