Queen Victoria (1819-1901) - a framed panel of white silk ' Piece Of The Wedding Robe Of Queen Victoria - St James's Palace 10th February 1840 '. Provenance to verso in the form of two handwritten period letters, the first; 'This piece of silk wedding gown was given to my father (then one of HM's Lords In Waiting) and came into my possession as being her godson, E. V. R. Powys, 1891' and the second; 'Piece of the magnificent silk robe worn by HM Queen Victoria of Great Britain & Ireland, on the occasion of her marriage with Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha at St James's Palace, 10th February 1840, and given by her to the 3rd Lord Lilford, one of Her Majesty's Lords In Waiting and left by his widow to their son Edward V. R. Powys,' Dated 1891 also. The section of silk measures 51cm x 21cm and shows signs of previous folding. Mounted in a period Victorian gilt frame (AF) to a total size of 62cm x 35cm. Queen Victoria's gown garnered a great deal of press attention at the time, as the royal wedding was highly publicized. The structured, eight-piece bodice featured a wide, open neckline. The off-the-shoulder sleeves were short and puffed. The pointed waistline was deep v-shaped, resembling the Basque shape. Both the neckline and sleeves were trimmed with lace. The floor-length skirt was very full, containing seven widths of fabric in forward-facing pleats. At her wedding ceremony, Victoria wore a satin train over six yards long, which twelve attendants carried down the aisle (Tobin, Pepper & Willes 32). The ceremony occurred on a rainy day, February 10th, 1840, in the Royal Chapel of St. James (Benson & Esher; Greenwood). The typically austere chapel had been transformed into a lavish and decorated scene suitable for great numbers of royalty and nobility (Greenwood). In her diary, Victoria asserted that it had been the happiest day of her life (Cavendish 8). (taken from: (taken from https://fashionhistory.fitnyc.edu/1840-queen-victorias-wedding-dress/) Victoria chose to wear a white wedding dress made from heavy silk satin, making her one of the first women to wear white for their wedding. The Honiton lace used for her wedding dress proved an important boost to Devon lace-making. Queen Victoria has been credited with starting the tradition of white weddings and white bridal gowns, although she was not the first royal to be married in white.
