Lot 1974

An 18th century oak longcase clock by G. Payne of Ludlow, with 30 hour movement and 10" square brass dial with date aperture. Case height 209 cm. CONDITION REPORT: We have the weight and pendulum however we have not had the movement running. The movement is dirty and does appear to operate without the pendulum in situ when weight is applied to the movement. The clock does also strike. The single pointer appears to move also. The movement is dirty with some losses to the paintwork to the numerals. There is no glass in the face door. The case is generally a little primitive but in reasonably good order with no serious condition issues. Neither door is warped and there is no evidence of any active woodworm. We have a weight for the clock, it is in our opinion the wrong one however. The bracket feet and plinth moulding are in our opinion later. We are not sure whether the clock is a marriage or not. The seatboard would appear to be original and the cheeks have not been built up. The upper section of the backboards running from the height of the hood moulding to the top of the case has an old but later overlaid panel of plywood. The mask around the dial fits the face very well.

Lot 1403

An Eastern fringed rug, the centre panel with repeating designs and with line border and fringed ends. Width 102 cm, length 194 cm.

There is also one 2 cm diameter hole. The wooden surround has six stress fractures to the left hand side and five to the right. There is no movement at the fractures but they are visible. The kneehole drawer appears to be locked. We have no key. All other drawers operate freely. All locks are present as are all handles. The drawer fronts are in generally in very good order. The moulding between the base and the pedestals has a small loss to the right hand corner. The right hand return moulding at the same point is missing. We do have a 6” section of this moulding in one drawer. The side panel veneers are very slightly lifting in places but there are no significant veneer losses. The plinth bases have the usual scuffs, marks and small veneer losses as one would expect.

Lot 293

A Japanese silk Kimono, early 20th century, finely embroidered with roses, peony, chrysanthemums and other flowers all against a royal blue ground. CONDITION REPORT: On the right sleeve a small section of the cuff lining has become detached from the cuff on each side approximately 10 cm long. On the same cuff on the armpit there is a 10 cm stretch of new stitching. To the rear of the armpit seam there is a 1 cm stitched repair. On the left armpit join there is a 1 cm section to the front which is loose or unstitched. On the right cuff it would appear that the cuff should be stitched from the bottom to 50% of the way up however this is 95% open. The left hand cuff appears to be intact with no signs of damage or re-stitching. There are small dark spots of staining to the front of the hanging cuff. In the decoration on the cuff there are a couple of loose threads. The stitching on the right hand cuff appears to be intact. There are sections down the left hand side front panel where it joins the back panel that have been re-stitched, this runs from the opening by the armpit down to the bottom. The opposing right hand side appears to be free from any obvious stitching and appears to be intact and free from alteration. The right hand side collar section has a 45 cm strip of re-stitching. The left hand side appears to be free from any such re-stitching. The back of the collar where it joins the main body is frayed 12 cm on the right and 14 cm on the left and has a small stitch repair to the centre. The main decoration on the right hand side front has one or two loose threads but appears to be intact. The left hands side is in much better condition with only very minor loose threads, one on a petal and one on a stem. The embroidery on the back panel all appears to be on first glance in good decorative order and with very minor light fraying to one or two thread but in our opinion this is not detrimental. The Kimono is very creased throughout. There is an owners name label applied to the interior centre which is slightly loose. There are very small light patches of staining to the front left hand panel directly beneath the flower head but this can only be seen when caught in the light and is not instantly obvious. Other than that we cannot see any further obvious staining.

Lot 1620

CONDITION REPORT: The cheval mirror is in generally very good structural order. There are some minor scuffs and scratches to the frame as one would expect but no significant marks. There are no repairs and no restoration. The mirror angles and holds as it should. The only minor issue with the piece are some minor losses to the handle retaining blocks at the back. We think that originally there may have been a bracing bar across the back. This would however have stopped the mirror from tilting which is probably why it has been removed. There are also some further scratches to the back panel and the odd paint drip. These are minor issues.

Lot 407

Two Chinese table screens, mid 20th century, one with six porcelain panels with a variety of birds amongst blossoming flowers and inscribed "The sound of the bird is as beautiful as the flower", and a six panel miniature table screen with landscape decoration on silk ground, tallest 21.7 cm.

Lot 1941

A George III oak and mahogany banded longcase clock, by Adam Costen Kirkham, with 30 hour movement, the case with long trunk door flanked by quarter column corners, height 200 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The movement appears to be ticking away as it should. It strikes when advanced. We have the weight and pendulum. The hood is in generally good condition. The door is not warped. The trunk door is also not warped but does have a small loss to the top left hand corner. The sides of the trunk are in generally in good order. North Italian School of The Marches (circa 1300-1320), Madonna and child, tempera on gold ground panel within an integral gabled frame. 58.5 cm x 28.5 cm. NOTE - Sold with copy receipt from Richard Philip for £17,500 dated June 2002 (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: As you will see from the images two of the glass panels are missing. The others have varying degrees of perishing to the contents behind each panel. There are losses to the gilding at the front and some minor traces of woodworm are also visible. There are losses and nibbles to the gilt paintwork in particular around the base. When viewed from the sides there is evidence of old primitive nails and other traces of woodworm which is clearly long gone and now inactive. The same comments apply to the back of the piece. As you will be aware from our description we have an invoice for this piece dating back to 2002 when it was purchased by the current owners. We have attempted to take some photographs under a UV light which will show some slight areas of over painting on the face of the Madonna and arm of the child. The size of the painting itself is approx 17 cm x 12 cm. This excludes the slightly raised immediate rectangular frame which is within the gabled frame. We believe the frame to be integral to the panel. Please note that this lot as come to us from a private source but was purchased by the current owners in 2002 for £17,500. We have a copy of the receipt.

The base at the rear has been slightly modified to accommodate a skirting board. The cut out is approximately 1 cm deep and 12 cm in height. Lot 392

A pair of Chinese cinnabar lacquer bowls and covers, circa 1970, each with carved lotus panel against a black key ground and on carved wood bases and in original box, height minus stands 8 cm. CONDITION REPORT: : Using a magnify one can see that there are some tiny tiny nibbles on the lower section of the upper rim where the frame of the peony joins the top rim. But my opinion these are manufacturing flaws. One lid has a very small partial split to the lacquer on a section of leafy frond, the spit does not go all the way through. The other bowl appears to be free from any obvious visible chips or cracks. Both wood stands are in good order. These bowls come with their original box.

The case has a black covering which is coming loose at the edges throughout.

Lot 1645

A Georgian oak lowboy, with single drawer and later brass drop handle and with silhouette supports. Width 75 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The table is structurally fairly sound. There are no breaks to legs. There are nibbles around the edges of the drawer front. The handle is non original. The drawer slides reasonably well. The left hand drawer support is loose where it joins the back leg. There is some evidence of very old long gone woodworm to the rear board of the piece. The drawer at some point has had a lock. This is no longer present. The primitive rectangular metal panel above the lock would be the keeper retainer, this is clearly old but later.

All of the polished mahogany is in good order all round and the door is not warped. The trunk is in generally in good condition. The door is not warped and well figured.
