Note: The critic Moira Jeffrey has called Garnier's work "reminiscent of Degas and those Victorian photographs of women accidentally glimpsed in domestic surroundings". Duncan MacMillan wrote in The Scotsman in 2003 of her "small smoky images of the female nude that are quite memorable" and in 2004 of Garnier's "exquisite small nude paintings" Garnier originally exhibited mostly in Scotland. In Edinburgh, at the RSA Annual Exhibitions, the RSA's Visual Arts Scotland, the Royal College of Physicians, The Leith Gallery, The Morningside Gallery, The Scottish Gallery, and the Phoenix 369 Gallery; and also at The Compass Gallery, Glasgow, The South Street Gallery, St Andrews, Frames Gallery, Perth, The Cairns Gallery, Peebles, the Paisley Institute of Art and Design, Paisley, and the RendezVous Gallery, Aberdeen. A Fine French Painted & Ruby & Diamond Set Fan By Jules Donzel, circa 1880. The double sided painted paper fan is decorated to the obverse with allover painted panels of young lovers and putti, signed Mark Bonber? to the right side, above a mother of pearl spine to front and back, decorated with a gold leaf cartouche of putti surrounded by garlands and motifs, with a further painted panel below signed J Donzel, the pierced section of the fan is set with approximately 50 small diamonds and rubies to front and back approximately 100 in total, the larger section of the spine has an enamel panel to the centre decorated with young lovers, the reverse is decorated with a gilt painted crown and crest to the top surrounded by further putti, with allover gilt painted swag panels, Duvelleroy London marked to the lower left, the fan is approximately 27cm high and 54cm wide, enclosed in a glazed double sided table cabinet with Rococco giltwood frame, overall 38cm high, 58cm wide. Jules Donzel was probably the most fashionable 19th century fan painter, his designs were sought by Paris maker Duvelleroy. This fan was possibly made for a Princess or Queen at a Royal wedding. Queen Mary had previously held a similar fan by Donzel at the wedding of Princess Victoria Louise of Prussia and Prince Ernest Augustus of Cumberland in Berlin 1913. Condition report Very minor age stains to paper, all stones are intact, Doesn’t appear to be any missing. Two minor tears to top, age creases to paper at the folds. Signatures are visible and clear. Overall in good condition. Additional pictures uploaded to the saleroom.

A Silver Mounted Mother-of-Pearl Snuff Box, English or Dutch, probably early 18th century, unmarked, oval with hinged cover, the front applied with a silver mount depicting a Harlequin and monkeys, the sides with scrolling foliate engraving; and A Gilt-Metal Mounted Agate Snuff Box, 19th century, oval with hinged cover, a banded agate cover and base, the front with a shield shaped reserve, each 7.5cm wide (2). The mother of pearl example - Some wear to the definition of the mounts to the cover. Split to the mount around the cover to the left of the hinge. the mother of pearl cover and base appear intact. There is a fine gap between the base panel and the silver at the back of the box. Some small scratches and nicks to the silver mounts.

A Gold and Enamel Snuff Box, marked FJ crowned, a stylised flower, and a crowned R resembling the Paris date letter, probably Hanau circa 1800, also struck with French eagle post 1838 warranty mark for gold, oval with hinged cover, the sides, base and cover decorated with blue enamel over an engine turned ground, the cover set with an oval enamelled panel depicting classical figures in a garden setting, all within white opalescent and green enamel bead and ropework borders, large loss of enamel to base, 7cm wide . Marks struck to inside of cover, all three with some wear. Duty marks struck to rim. Large amount of loss to the enamel on base. Front panel has also had re-enamelling. Hairline crack to the inset panel in cover, and one or two scratches. Some discolouration and losses to the smalles enamel borders on the sides of the box, mostly below the hinge ant to the front. Cover closing well, hinge appears free from damage. 81.2gr.

Horatio Lord Nelson Interest: A George III Cut Steel and Gold Presentation Snuff Box, in the manner of Matthew Boulton, circular with pull-off cover, inscribed to the interior This Box was made by a true Born Briton, John May Of Birmingham and Presented to the King Of The Ocean Horatio Vist. Nelson June 10th 1802. Whose daring deeds of Arms Rais'd England's Flag Triumphant O'er the World, the steel base highly polished forming a mirror, 7.8cm diameter Provenance: From a private family collection, almost certainly acquired prior to 1910, and thence by family descent .  The box is unmarked. Cover fits well and closes securely. Areas of rust in many places and quite significant corrosion to the polished mirror base. No apparent significant damages or repairs. The engraved panel to the interior is slightly thin and gives when pressed. To the interior is a scrap of printed text describing the box in question, it starts "Last in this unique collection of boxes, is a circular one of cut steel, 3in. in diameter, the whole of the lid and sides in the workmanship formerly so much in vogue for sword hilts, knee and shoe buckles, and other ornaments....", and goes on to describe this box.
