A French Restoration Palais-Royal ormolu and engraved mother of pearl nιcessaire, decorated with cherubs, flowers and masks, the hinged lid with a foliate pierced gallery and centred with a glazed panel containing cut card or paper flowers and leaves, the interior with a mirror to the underside of the lid and with a lift-out tray, containing: a pair of mother of pearl handled scissors, a thimble and a needle case, 8cm high, 16cm wide, 10.6cm deep.
λ A George III rolled paper tea caddy, of navette shape, inlaid with barber's pole stringing and decorated with scrolling leaves and flowers on a green foil ground, the hinged lid with a green stained ivory finial in the form of a pineapple, revealing a lidded compartment inlaid with a burr panel, 19.4cm wide.

* Slave Trade abolitionists. A small group of items relating to slave trade abolitionists, Joseph Sturge, George Thompson and Henry Vincent, including an autograph letter signed from Lindley Murray to Susanna Horne, 1807, ‘I have just received the most interesting intelligence of the great cause of the abolition of the slave trade, having received its accomplishment. Thos. Clarkson writes the number for it was 283, and only 16 against it. He expresses himself on the occasion, with strong and pious feelings. “I shall leave London (says he) with a heart full of gratitude to the great Parent of all mercies, that he has been pleased thus to render a portion of my life useful to my oppressed fellow creatures”’, some toning, one page with integral address panel and seal tear, tipped onto old album leaf, 4to, together with an autograph letter from Henry Vincent to William Big, 31 July, no year, Nottingham, concerning an election, ‘We desire the presence of deputies from towns where an interest is felt in the success of Joseph Sturge…’, one page with integral address panel, some browning, 4to, plus an autograph letter signed from Joseph Sturge to an unidentified recipient, Birmingham, 23 December 1841, thanking him for the pamphlet which he has read with interest and saying that he will write back next week on the franchise question, tipped onto an album leaf, some spotting, small 4to, plus the signature of George Thompson from the end of a letter (Qty: 4)NOTESLindley Murray (1745-1826), American Quaker lawyer, writer and grammarian. Drawn in Lithography by J. D. Harding. With Historical, Antiquarian, and Descriptive Letterpress, 1st edition, Joseph Hogarth [-E. Gambart and Co.,], 1847-50, 10 original parts only, containing half-title, title-page, dedication leaf, 1-168 (of 308) pp. text (Contents and List of Plates, 2 leaves, absent), each in original wood-engraved buff paper wrappers, 51 (of 90) hand-coloured lithographic plates mounted within gilt frames on stiff card leaves as issued, heightened with gum arabic, tissue-guards, part 1 with additional 2 pp. 'Scotland Delineated Advertiser' to rear, tipped-in 'Notice to Subscribers' slip to parts 3-6, laid-in advertisement slip and bifolium to part 6, part 1 front wrapper, half-title and title-page spotted and nicked, occasional marginal spotting to text-leaves, light to moderate spotting to a few plates, chiefly above the skyline and to mounts, but sometimes stronger and more extensive, notably to plates 29 (Linlithgow Palace) and 62 (Falkland Palace), part 1 wrappers split along spine, wrappers of other parts intact but gutta percha fragile, text-leaves loose in parts 3, 4 and 10, each part laid into original patterned green cloth porfolio with green roan backstrip and gilt vignette to front panel, parts 4 and 7 spines worn and cracked, elephant folio (64 x 45 cm) (Qty: 10)NOTESProvenance: Private collection, United Kingdom. Abbey Scenery 493; not in Tooley. The very rare hand-coloured issue, housed in the original wrappers and cloth portfolios, which are unmentioned in Abbey and almost unknown in commerce; the Robert and Maria Travis copy (2005) was catalogued as retaining the wrappers but with 'contemporary cloth' portfolios. Scotland Delineated is considered of the great topographical books of the 19th century, with the splendid hand-coloured lithographs doing justice to the work of some of the finest landscape painters of the day. * Broadhurst (Arthur Brooks, 1860-1930). The personal binoculars and fishing priest of an Indian big-game hunter, i.e. 1) a pair of C. P. Goerz Triëder 12x binoculars, serial number 2568, housed in contemporary button-fastened leather case hand-painted with address panel 'Ravenoaks, Penrith, Cumberland' and motifs including a tiger, fish, stags, fish, skull-and-crossbones and swastika, red velvet lining, binoculars and case both rubbed, binoculars in good working order; 2) a wooden fishing priest (approx. length 38 cm), pommel carved in shape of human head, grip carved in ropework pattern and incorporating 2 panels lettered 'A.B.B. Feb: 1895' and 'Simon the Salmon Slayer', notched shaft, grip and shaft sometime split and skilfully braced with 4 strips of metal (Qty: 2)NOTESArthur Brooks Broadhurst (1860-1930) was an officer in the 14th (King's) Hussars, and author of the rare privately-printed journal Three Months Tiger Shooting the Deccan (Secunderabad, 1884). He was born at Cheetham Hill, Lancashire and later lived at Penrith; his father was the industrialist Henry Tootal Broadhurst. He reached the rank of captain and was gazetted adjutant of auxiliary forces in 1888. Broadhurst's authorship of Three Months Tiger Shooting appears only now to have come to light through the emergence of his autograph manuscript (see the previous lot): it was previously attributed only to 'A. B. B.', the moniker carved into the fishing priest.

Compare: The painting is a copy (without the angels in the sky and on the left side) after a work of Giovanni Battista Pagi (1554-1627). The original can be seen in the Musei di Strada Nuova-Palazzo Bianco, Genoa, inv. PB 2833 (link). The drawing by Paggi is kept in the National Galleries Scotland, inv. D 3079 (link). Around 1600, the design was available in the Netherlands through an engraving by Cornelis Galle, which is kept in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, object number: RP-P-OB-6593 (link). The image soon became very popular and a very similar composition can be found in works attributed to Gerard de la VallŽe (1596/97-after 1667) and Jan Brueghel (1568-1625) and Hans Rottenhammer (1564-1625), respectively Sotheby's New York City, 3 October 1996, lot 55 and Hampel Kunstauktionen Munich, 19 September 2006, lot 267 (link and link).
