Lot 43

Late Period, 664-332 BC. A painted cartonnage panel depicting Ma'at with arms and wings outstretched holding two feathers, kneeling on a panel containing the four sons of Horus, beneath an arc with Osiris head finials and uraeus above the centre; mounted in a glazed wooden frame. Private collection, Surrey, UK. Ma'at was the ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice. Ma'at was also personified as a goddess regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation. In the Egyptian underworld, the hearts of the dead were said to be weighed against her single Feather of Ma'at, symbolically representing the concept of truth. This is why hearts were left in Egyptian mummies while their other organs were removed, as the heart was seen as part of the Egyptian soul. If the heart was found to be lighter or equal in weight to the feather of Maat, the deceased had led a virtuous life and would go on to Aaru, or paradise. The figures to either side of the goddess are the Souls of Pe and Nekhen, the divine ancestors of the Pharaoh. 1.5 kg, 47 x 35cm including frame (18 1/2 x 13 3/4"). Fine condition.

Lot 44

Late Period, 664-332 BC. A rectangular cartonnage panel depicting a mourning scene with a mummy of Osiris in the centre with four canopic jars, above a bird with one stretched wing; Isis and Nepthys standing to each side with raised hands. Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980. The scene depicts a mourning scene of Osiris attended by his sister/wife Isis and sister Nepthys. He was defeated by his brother and rival Seth and cut in pieces, but Isis collected all of them and put back together, so her husband became the ruler of the Underworld. Isis is sometimes represented as a kite, often pictured hovering over her husband's body as she fans life into him with her wings. The particularly shrill, piercing cry of the kite is thought to have been suggestive of the cries of wailing women in mourning. 80 grams, 24.1 x 22.9cm (9 1/2 x 9"). Fine condition, some repainting.

Lot 45

Late Period, 664-332 BC. Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1990s. The Kiev archaeological culture was located in the basin of the rivers Dnieper and Visla; between the 3rd and 5th centuries; archaeologists connect this culture with historical ancestors of the Slavs. However, there are suggestions that in different regions of the Kiev culture ethnogenetic processes were not the same. In some cases, the Slavic component prevailed, whilst Baltic and others were dominant elsewhere. 448 grams, 58cm high (23"). Fine condition.

Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1980s and 1990s. See MacGregor, A. et al. A Summary Catalogue of the Continental Archaeological Collections, Oxford, 1997, items 70.11-70.14 for type. Bird figures with a human face on the body or hip are a known feature of Germanic art in the 6th-7th century; a famous example is the raven appliqué on the shield in Mound 1 at Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, England. In the context of the royal burial, the image refers to the god Woden (Norse Óðinn) who travels in the form of a bird during the tale of the theft of the Mead of Inspiration. 4.40 grams, 32mm (1 1/4"). Very fine condition.

Lot 89

Roman Period, 30 BC-323 AD. A moulded white glass inlay panel with pink pigment, profile male bust with blue outline to the brow and eye. Property of a London gentleman; acquired before 1970. 10 grams, 43mm (1 3/4"). Fine condition.

[2] Very fine condition, usage wear.

5th century AD. A silver-gilt hinged buckle set comprising: the dished loop with cabochon garnets at the hinge and either side of the couch for the tongue, panels of scrolled decoration between; the carinated tongue with scroll decoration on the forward lateral panels, four inset cabochon garnets; the lozengiform plaque with scrolled decoration on the main panel, opposed bird figures placed on the rear edges and a finial comprising addorsed bird-heads, all with inset cabochon garnet eyes; plaque pierced for attachment. Property of a gentleman; acquired in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007 (Kerch, Ukraine, p.306"). Buckles such as these are often described as being Gothic, an east Germanic people who settled in the Roman provinces as the political stability of these areas collapsed. Their art styles are typical of the Migration period in that they are composed of stylised animals and swirls and often employing garnets; there is also a hint of Roman and Byzantine styles. The display of wealth was carried out by by both men and women and was a means of defining themselves on the basis of their common lineage as part of distinct families. As well as distinguishing themselves through formal Germanic dress, it is also likely that ruling families sought to identify themselves with the high culture of the Byzantium. 66 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Very fine condition; one cabochon absent.

Lot 919

6th century AD. A rectangular silver-gilt plaque with central rectangular cell with cloison garnet and four panel of scroll decoration, five holes for attachment pins; strap to the forward edge retaining the loop and returned beneath; loop with sloping outer face, chip-carved zigzag detail; triangular-section tongue with similar detail to the upper faces, beast-head detail to the forward end. Property of a Salisbury, Wiltshire, UK collector; formerly property of a London collector, acquired before 1980. Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, item I.16.1. Buckles of this general type were worn by Ostrogothic women living on the northern shore of the Black Sea, south eastern Europe and Italy and are a good indicator for settlement patterns by these people during the Migration Period. Garnets were highly favoured at this time and were traded from India and Sri Lanka and it is believed that the fashion for them derived from the Huns in Central Asia. 40 grams, 58mm (2 1/4"). [No Reserve] Very fine condition.

Lot 927

6th century AD. A flat-section bronze plate brooch formed as a pair of conjoined bird-heads on a common neck; each head a drum-shaped panel with central incised point and concentric border, waisted head with curved beak; the neck and body with alternating ring-and-dot motifs and panels with a chip-carved concentric spiral; catchplate, pin-lugs and part of spring to the reverse. Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1980s and 1990s. Cf. MacGregor, A. et al. A Summary Catalogue of the Continental Archaeological Collections, Oxford, 1997, item 69.4. S-brooches were one of the primary forms of decoration worn during the sixth century. They are found in Langobardic graves in the middle Danube, Pannonia and northern Italy. By the second half of the sixth century they had become one of the most common type of brooches across Europe with variants worn in the Rhineland, northwestern France, Scandinavia and Anglo-Saxon England. The creatures on the majority of these brooches are conceived as having bird heads, but some have elongated jaws that are drawn from a northern Germanic repertoire of forms that are believed to be dragons. 7.28 grams, 28mm (1").
