After John Hoskins, the Trusty Servant, oil on board, circa 1930; with the College coat of arms and the motto MANNERS MAKYTH MAN upper left; the explanatory verse below; set into an ebonised moulding frame with hinges to the reverse; 103cm high, 49cm wide;PROVENANCE: Removed from the Gentlemen's Smoking Room of the RMMV Winchester Castle, where the panel appears to have served as a cupboard door. The Winchester Castle was built in 1930 in the yard of the great Harland & Wolff. Refitted in 1938, she was requisitioned by the Royal Navy who held her until 1949 when she was returned to civilian service. She was broken up in 1960.

Gustav Becker, Freiburg, an Edwardian inlaid mahogany chiming mantel clock, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and quarters on four gong rods and stamped to the backplate with the trademark for Gustav Becker, Freiburg and numbered 2403178, the round brass dial engraved with black Roman hour numerals ad having a 'Chime/Silent' lever at XI o'clock, with blued steel spade hands, the mahogany curved-top case with boxwood inlay to the front panel and standing on brass bun feet, height 36cm.
Alliez & Berguen, Paris a French gilt mantel clock, the eight-day duration movement striking the hours and half-hours on a bell, the backplate stamped for the maker Alliez & Berguen, Paris, 78, the round white enamel dial having black Roman hour numerals and blued steel moon hands, the gilt-brass waisted case having applied floral mounts and decorative blue porcelain panel inset to the front, the rear of the case stamped H. Picard, standing on a giltwood base with glass dome, height 28cm inc. base, 22cm clock. Complete with a giltwood wall bracket with ormolu decoration and Ho-ho bird to the front.
John Sampson, Penzance a Georgian oak longcase clock: the eight-day duration movement striking the hours on a bell with the twelve-inch brass break-arch dial having a raised silvered chapter ring engraved with black Roman hour numerals and Arabic five-minute markings, the matted dial centre having an inset subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture, with cast-brass c-scroll and female-head spandrels, the arch having a round silvered boss engraved with the maker's name John Sampson, Penzance, the oak case with cast-brass capitals to the fluted hood columns and surmounted by a caddy- top with fretwork panel and flanked by two brass ball-and-spire finials, height 226cm.Biography John Sampson is recorded as working in Penzance from at least 1752 when he advertised for 'any young man bred in the clock or watchmaking way wanting employment to apply to him'.
