Mineral waters at Barèges.- Meighan (Sir Christopher, English gentleman who was a member of the French semi-lay Roman Catholic Congregation called the Order of the Holy Ghost, fl. 1764) Autograph Letter signed to Andrew Coltée Ducarel, 3pp. & address panel, folio, Paris, 8th April 1763, a long letter announcing his intention of visiting the Pyrenees and the waters at Barèges, "I, strongly feel the Impulse of this Passion of traveling... the Party of traversing the Pyrenees, from Perpignan, to Bayonne, in examining the Plants peculiar to such a mountainous Region, the mineral Fountains as those named, les Eaux bonnes, those of Cauterez, and many other, which, besides the famous Springs of Bareges, abound there; in searching the various Minerals and Fossils, in observing the Difference of the Climes in high and low Situations, and Health of the Inhabitants", and other news including antiquarian and medals, "I sometimes meet Abbé Barthelemi, who has nothing new, he becomes too much a Courtier... An acquaintance I have made with Monsieur Duhodent, particularly rich in Medals", books for sale in France, "Monsieur Pellerin... will not his late Volumes des Villes grecques, interest you as well as his Recueil des Rois, peu connus?... I have procured you Chevilland's Nobiliare de Normandie... only to be purchased in Paris", and his application to join the Royal Society, "If I have the honour and good Fate of being admited into your illustrious R[oyal] Society, Mr. Morehead or Counsellor Duane, will immediately, pay the twenty five pounds", 1 small hole and tear where opened, 3 small tears in margins, creased; and another ALs from Meighan to Ducarel concerning the printing of the "Labbé Fontaine's Translation of Horaces Odes", sm. 4to, 1792, both folds, browned (2).⁂ The original of a letter published by John Nichols, Illustrations of the Literary History of the Eighteenth Century, vol. IV, 1822. Meighan published A treatise of the nature and powers of Bareges's baths and waters, 1742, and a new enlarged edition in 1764. Meighan was elected to the Royal Society in 1764, one of his proposers was Ducarel.Andrew Coltée Ducarel (1713-85), librarian and antiquary.
Colet (John) A ryght fruitfull monition, co[n]cernyng the ordre of a good christian mans lyfe..., 16pp., second edition, black letter, woodcut initial and tail-piece, Bute copy with Cardiff Castle bookplate, bound in handsome early twentieth century panelled dark blue morocco, gilt, by de Coverly, double gilt fillet borders and panel with delicate central lozenge of flowers, pinecones and ornaments tooled in gilt, spine titled in gilt, g.e., joints a little rubbed, preserved in modern morocco-backed cloth drop-back box, [STC 5548], 12mo, J[hon] C[awood], 1563.⁂ A superb copy of this rare work offering advice on one's duty to God and one's neighbours, chastity before marriage, proper behaviour towards one's wife, children and servants, and charity to the poor. ESTC records only 3 UK copies (BL, Bodleian Library in Oxford, and a private collection - ?this copy) and another in the Folger Library in America.
Lamb (Charles [& Mary]) John Woodvil, a Tragedy...to which are added, Fragments of Burton, first edition, a fine copy in handsome later crushed dark blue morocco, by Rivière & Son, covers with triple gilt fillet border, spine gilt in compartments, inner gilt dentelles, t.e.g., others uncut, 1802; The Works, 2 vol., first collected edition, lacking advertisement leaf at end of vol.2, modern blue morocco, by Bayntun of Bath, covers with geometric panel formed by rules in black & gilt and small gilt circles to corners, spine gilt, g.e., spine slightly faded, 1818; and an 1867 Essays of Elia with mounted manuscript note by Charles Lamb, 8vo (4)⁂ The first mentioned is Lamb's first dalliance with prose drama; against the advice of his friends Coleridge & Southey he submitted John Woodvil to the Drury Lane Theatre but the play was deemed unsuitable. The work also includes Mary Lamb's poem 'Helen', marking her first appearance in print, while the second item also contains poems by Mary.

Savage (Thomas) The Power of the Dog, first edition, original boards, slight bumping to spine ends, dust-jacket, light creasing joints and spine tips, remains of prices label to lower panel, but overall a sharp, near-fine example, 8vo, Boston, 1967.⁂ A superb example of Savage's most famous work. Though published to critical acclaim the novel sold poorly and was largely forgotten until a recent revival that culminated in Jane Campion's superb 2021 film adaptation. Many copies allegedly went to libraries and first editions in good condition are consequently scarce.

The second appears to be especially unusual, we can trace no example in the dust-jacket.

Love, Kate", light toning and marking to spine, original silver reflective slip-case, an excellent example, small 4to, Los Angeles, Privately Printed, 1966.⁂ Ruscha's landmark photobook documenting one of Los Angeles' most famous streets with a charming Hollywood association. The book was gifted by actress Kate Draper to the playwright and screenwriter Dick Vosburgh on the occasion of the opening night of Vosburgh's A Day in Hollywood, A Night in the Ukraine in which Draper was appearing.
