JERVIS JOHN: (1735-1823) 1st Earl of St Vincent. British Admiral of the Fleet remembered for his victory at the Battle of Saint Cape Vincent (1797) and as a patron of Horatio Nelson. A.L.S., St Vincent, one page, 8vo, Torr Abbey, 6th December 1800, to [William Jervis] 'My dear brother'. St. Vincent informs his correspondent, 'I write to Mr Anson by this post desiring to have the refusal of Hilcot - agreeing with you entirely, that if Edward has not occupation he will be restless & unhappy - I will purchase anything you like as an equivalent for Meaford which on every account, one wishes, should be attached to the Title' adding the postscript, 'I am morally certain of bringing Mr Thos. Jervis into Yarmouth, with a high hand St. Vt.' With blank integral leaf. With autograph address panel and remnants of a red wax seal (a tear where originally broken). Together with an unsigned contemporary epitaph to John Jervis, four pages, 8vo, n.d. (c.1823), n.p. The unidentified author neatly pens an obituary with pertinent biographical detail and comment, including, 'At the early age of thirteen he entered the Royal Navy remaining during a long and active life one of it's brightest ornaments… On the ever memorable 14th of Feb 1797 he achieved off Cape St. Vincent, with a far inferior force, that conquest over the Spanish fleet, which carried his renown to the greatest heights and destroyed the effect of one of the most powerful combinations ever directed against the power of Great Britain…' Some light dust toning and minor age wear, otherwise G, 2 The present letter from St. Vincent refers to Meaford Hall in Staffordshire, in which the Earl was born. The residence at the time of the correspondence belonged, no doubt through his inheritance, to his brother, William Jervis. St. Vincent wished to acquire the hall so that it would become part of his Title, 'Earl St. Vincent, Baron Jervis of Meaford'. A task in which he succeeded. St. Vincent had been MP for Yarmouth before he received his peerage in 1779. The postscript most likely refers to his intention to influence the securing of a seat for Thomas Jervis. If so he was unsuccessful.
