Evert Collier (1642-1708) attributed to, Dutch School 17th / 18th Century oil on panel painting of a pipe smoking peasant in a red feathered hat, signed to left hand side ‘ E. Colier ‘. E. Colier perhaps the signature of Evert Collier (Dutch, 1642-1708), sometimes known as Edwaert Collier who often used variations of his name to sign works such as Edward Collier, Eduwaert Collier, Edwart Collier, or even spelling surname Colyer. The subject matter of the work has been taken from an earlier Adriaen Brouwer (Dutch, 1605-1608) painting of smoking peasants, with the pipe smoker in a red had character lifted directly from this work, the frame itself is attributed ‘ BRAUWER ‘ confirming this. Further to this, the label affixed to verso reads ' Copy of a David Terniers 17th Century Dutch Artist Signed E. Collier '. This refers to David Teniers The Younger (Dutch, 1610-1690), who again painted a number of similar character models in various renditions of a peasant pipe smoking. Framed for his use of Trompe-l’oiel, Collier’s works pop out of the surface, the sense of depth can be seen clearly in this work, particularly in the depth of detail to the peasants face. Framed in gilt frame. 20cm x 24cm.
