A rare and intriguing piece of photographic history, this vintage portrait flash lamp was manufactured by Chas. H. Nichols of St. Louis, Missouri. The lamp is prominently marked with its original manufacturer's plaque, which reads: "The Portrait Flash Lamp, Pat. Sept. 9, 1902, Chas. H. Nichols, St. Louis, MO." This was the first flash lamp to be mounted on a tripod using magnesium powder. The copyright date signifies the patent and early development of flash lamp technology for photography.
