PRINCE CHARLES OF BELGIUM: (1903-1983) Count of Flanders, second son of Albert I, King of the Belgians. Prince Regent of Belgium 1944-50, serving in lieu of his older brother King Leopold III. Rare T.L.S., Charles Prince Regent of Belgium, one page, folio, Bruxelles, 27th January 1945, to Lieutenant Colonel Gualberto Villarroel, Constitutional President of the Republic of Bolivia, in French. The typed letter entitles `Leopold III, King of the Belgians´, and bears to the heading an embossed purple crown and two lions. Prince Charles signs at the foot of the document in his capacity as Prince Regent of Belgium and adds in his hand `In the name of His Majesty King Leopold III´. The letter refers to the recently appointed President of Bolivia, sending him congratulations and wishing him and his Country prosperity. Countersigned by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Paul-Henri Spaak. Very small holes and tears to the left edge, due to previous filing, not affecting the text or signature. VG £100-150 Leopold III (1901-1983) King of the Belgians 1934-51 when he abdicated in favour of the heir apparent, his son Baudouin. In 1944 Leopold was declared incompetent to rule, his brother Prince Charles becoming Prince Regent of Belgium. At the time of the present letter King Leopold was in Germany, deported by Nazis. Gualberto Villarroel López (1908-1946) Head of State of Bolivia 1943-46. A reformist with fascist sympathies. On 21st July 1946, anti-government crowds took control of the Palace of Government, and although Villarroel announced his resignation, he was assassinated. Villarroel's body was tossed from a balcony where the crowds proceeded to hang it from a lamp-post opposite the Palace. Villarroel is also known as “El Presidente Colgado” ("The Hanged President") and has since been revered by the majority of the Bolivian population as a martyr and hero.
