Roman / Byzantine, ca. 6th century CE. A hexagonal bronze vessel with straight walls with linear decoration at underside of rim and base, three attachment loops on the rim, suspended from three chains that connect. Note that the chains are of slightly different lengths and are comprised of loops of differing sizes. Given the consistent quality of the patina we deem this to be an old repair. How remarkable to find such an example of ancient ingenuity! Censers were incense burners. They are often difficult to differentiate from lamps, because they share a number of similar characteristics. Hence, it is also possible that this particular example although very likely an incense burner may have been used as a lamp. Size: 7"L with chain x 4" at widest (17.8 x 10.2 cm); vessel is 2.25" H (5.7 cm) high Provenance: Ex-private New Jersey collection acquired prior to 1980. Condition: Chains different lengths with different sized loops, indicative of an ancient repair. Quite rare! Otherwise intact with stunning green patina! All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. We ship worldwide and handle all shipping in-house for your convenience. #111028
