A Victorian brass binnacle from the Barnstaple Ketch 'Emma Louise': fitted 3 inch dry card compass by H Hughes, London, the interior of the binnacle case inscribed 'Emma Louise, 1880' , with large oval observation window and double lamp holders with later turned wooden covers, raised on a teak wooden stand, 109cm high, together with an octagonal walnut veneered bulkhead clock from the same vessel (2) *Notes- The Emma Louise was built in Barnstaple by William Westacott and was the last wooden vessel to be built by them. Her first owners were Francis Drake and Samuel Berry. A reference is made to the ship in 'Somerset Harbours' Farr, G , 1954 pages 150-151 in which he relates a conversation with Captain Philip Rale of the Emma Louise regarding her condition. Later on in 1954 the Emma Louise was taken from Minehead to Appledore and broken up.

Shade with paint splashes but in good condition. Arm bent and distorted in places. Marble base stained and with minor chips.

A square brass binnacle from the motor fishing vessel 'Jose' of Penzance: the 4 inch liquid filled compass in a gimballed mount with a square case with lift up glazed windows and rectangular lamp box to one side, 32 x 25 x 20cm, with attached brown label inscribed ' This brass binnacle and compass was on the motor fishing vessel 'Jose' from Penzance. The vessel was in service at the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 and then used as a fire float on the Thames in London for the duration of the war'
