Chinese Hardstone Mtd. Bronze Elephant Candlestick Now mounted as a lamp, Qing Dynasty, 18th/19th Century. The elaborately dressed elephant incised with circular scrolls suggesting the elephant’s hair, supporting a howdah, all applied with coral and turquoise cabochons, the elephant surmounted by a vessel-form candle nozzle, on a shaped rectangular plinth similarly decorated, drilled. Height 12 in., overall, 24 in., Width 9 ½ in., Depth 6 in.

North Africa, Ca. 300-600 AD A beautiful terracotta oil lamp featuring a recessed discus with two parallel filling holes and adorned with a stylised depiction of a fish; shoulders embellished with ornamentally filled triangles, a long nozzle, and a round mouth. Worn, remains of sinter, intact.During the Roman Empire, a lamp was originally called a 'lychnus' with the oldest Roman lamps dating back to the third century BC.
