A ceramic vessel with pierced pedestal foot, bulbous body, waisted neck, flared and chamfered rim, two lateral strap handles terminating in large gusseted discs; the inner surface with cream glaze; the body with painted decoration comprising: Side A - a laurel frond to the neck above a profile female bust with chignon and drop earrings outlined in cream within a pelleted frame; Side B - a profile bust with flowers to the neck, robed female standing in a doorway holding an oil lamp(?"). 1.2 kg, 33cm (13"). Property of a gentleman; previously from a German collection formed in the early 1980s. The volute krater formed part of the assemblage of drinking materials to be used at a symposium, such as cups, wine strainers, etc. The decoration on this example would suggest that it was manufactured in one of the Greek colonies of South Italy. .
