Roland and Gertrude McAlpine Woods travelled extensively in the Far East in the 1920s and 1930s. On many of their journeys they visited places few Europeans had been to and on one occasion they were the first 'travellers' from the West to visit Yunnan province in China. People travelling for the sake of travelling were largely unknown at that point and in that place. Mr and Mrs McAlpine Woods retired to East Devon.
