2nd century AD. A terracotta discoid lamp with pierced lug handle to the rear, D-shaped nozzle; ring-and-dot motifs to the shoulder, billetted band to the nozzle; to the discus, a high-relief standing figure with right hand raised to the face and sceptre supported in the left hand (Harpocrates?); to the underside, an extensive impressed maker's mark. The Egyptian cult of the child-god Horus was adopted by the Greeks as Harpocrates (??????????), regarded as a youthful god associated with silence and secret knowledge. The Roman Empire adopted a variety of eastern mystery cults, including those of Mithras, Isis, Harpocrates and Serapis. Harpocrates was usually depicted with his right index finger raised to his chin and lips, interpreted by the Greek as a gesture of silence but actually derived from the Egyptian hieroglyph for 'child'. 59 grams, 96mm (3 3/4"). Ex Davis collection, Cambridgeshire, UK; acquired 1990s. [No Reserve] Fine condition; accretion to surface.

Vendor advises that this lamp was on loan to the stained glass museum in Ely Cathedral for 4 years until recently. Illuminated by 3 bulbs in base, 1 in central column and 1 under shade.
