A LACQUER BRASS STANDARD LAMP, the onyx circular tier with an ornate fret pierced apron, raised on an openwork triform base with lobed feet, now fitted for electricity, 65.5" high (including fitting)Provenance: Selected contents from the Estate of Marevna (1892-1984) Born Marie Vorobieff-Stebelska in Cheboksary, Russia and given her signature nickname by Maxim Gorky, after a Russian fairy sea princess, Marevna moved to Paris in 1912 as an aspiring twenty year old. It was there that she became friends with some of the greatest artists and writers of the early twentieth century then resident in Montparnasse and especially at La Ruche, among them were Pablo Picasso Georges Braque, Marc Chagall , Jean Cocteau, Ilya Ehrenburg, Max Jacob, Moise Kisling, Henri Matisse, Amedeo Modigliani and Chaim Soutine.It was while a resident of La Ruche that Marevna met the prominent Mexican artist Diego Rivera and the two had a complicated relationship, which produced a daughter, Marika in 1919. Rivera returned to Mexico in 1921, leaving Marevna and their daughter behind in Paris.The following lots (1238-1249a) are some of the items Marevna chose to surround herself with in later years, some of which can be seen in the images shown here, notably her easel, upon which no doubt she created and showcased some of her most famous works, and an alabaster mask of an unidentified face, perhaps showcasing the inspiration she received from her friends and contemporaries, such as Picasso and Braque
A pair of late-19th/early-20th century Continental porcelain and metal mounted baluster-shaped Vases, each delicately decorated with various birds perched upon sprigs and encrusted with varying sized handmade and decorated flower heads in Coalbrookdale style (possibly table oil lamp bases originally), 37cm high x 25cm (widest) CONDITION REPORT: Many of the flowers are damaged, many have missing leaves, some of the flowers have been stuck back on. There are old restorations etc.,
ADIE & LOVEKIN LTD; an Edward VII hallmarked silver table lighter modelled as a Roman oil lamp on loaded foot, Birmingham 1913, length 9.5cm, a silver handled ivory bladed letter opener, Sampson Mordan & Co, London 1889, length 20.5cm, and a silver circular powder box with mirrored lid, W & H Ltd, Birmingham 1917 (3). CONDITION REPORT: Lamp: handle at an angle, two pronounced dents near handle, further minor dents and general wear, lid very slightly crimped. Powder box: mirror at fault, glazed over, lid interior crimped in one area, general wear. Page turner: ivory has been re-glued into handle, a few nibbles to top, general wear.
A Victorian brass Corinthian column oil lamp with opaque ruby and white glass reservoir, height 60cm including fittings, a further example with floral painted reservoir and foliate embossed band to the base, also two associated tulip shaped shades and a funnel (5). CONDITION REPORT: Taller lamp: dirty, wear/rubbing to finish, residue on reservoir, shade with abrasions. Smaller lamp: reservoir with rubbing to decoration and abrasions, rubbing to brass finish, nibbles and rough patches to shade.
An Arts and Crafts brass ceiling lamp of circular form with stud decorated bands and three stylised floral coppered branches, with clear and green glass tulip shaped shades. CONDITION REPORT: From rose to lowest shade approx 59cm. Diameter approx 50cm from shade to shade when hung. Surface wear and dirt.
