A LARGE FAMILLE ROSE PORCELAIN VASE AND COVER, QINGChina, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Of ovoid form, rising from a recessed foot to a short unglazed rim, the exterior is finely decorated in bright polychrome enamels with figurative scenes of court ladies, attendants, or immortals, all within lobed medallions interspersed with lotus scroll and framed by decorative borders below the rim and above the foot. The cover is similarly decorated and has a metal finial of later date. Condition: Good condition with minor wear and firing flaws, shallow surface scratches and a drilled hole to the underside from the former usage as a lamp. Provenance: French private collection. A BRONZE OIL LAMP DEPICTING GAJALAKSHMI WITH ELEPHANTS, SOUTH INDIA, KERALA, 15TH-17TH CENTURYFinely cast, the deep circular oil basin with a triangular outcropping, encircled by beaded decoration, supporting an arched backplate depicting a seated Lakshmi flanked by trumpeting elephants, below a central kirtimukha. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown patina with cuprite and malachite encrustations.Provenance: The Connemara Hotel Gallery, Madras, India, c. 1985. Collection Particuliere Française, acquired from the above. The Connemara Hotel is the Grande Dame of the Madras hospitality scene. Named after Lord Connemara, Governor of Madras from 1886 - 1890, the hotel as it stands today is an Art Deco building completed in 1937. Finely cast and engraved, supported on a tall, flaring foot with the round body tapering to a narrow neck surmounted by a lamp-shaped spout. The body finely decorated in silver inlays with deer on a scrolling foliate ground encompassed by a copper-inlaid border, the shoulder decorated with an inscription in Arabic script. Titled Yuki no Katada Ukimido (Snow on the Ukimido at Katada).A beautiful winter waterfront with light snow falling, a snowy embankment in the foreground, and a stilted pavilion in the background with a single lamp post, faintly lit. A snow-covered pine branch in the left register blocks the view of the pavilion's walkway. Inscriptions: Along the left-hand margin, Hanken shoyu Watanabe Shozaburo [copyright ownership Watanabe Shozaburo].SIZE of the sheet 39 x 26.6 cmCondition: Good impression and great colors slightly faded, minor creasing to the margins. Tsuchiya Koitsu (1870-1949) was a renowned landscape artist and a student of the famous Meiji-era print designer Kobayashi Kiyochika (1847-1915). He gained prominence as a designer of shin hanga (New Prints) for major woodblock print publishers from the early 1930s to 1940. Tsuchiya Koitsu's prints were known for their dramatic use of light and interesting color effects, influenced by his teacher Kiyochika.
