Shiva Lingam oil lamp; Nepal, 18th century.Bronze.Measurements: 12 x 15 x 10 cm.The lower ring represents the Yoni, the vagina that symbolises Parvati, while the Lingam or penis is a symbolic representation of her consort, the god Shiva. This type of lamp should be lit especially on Mondays, the favourite day of Shiva, who represents the fire that never ceases. The cobras adorning the lamp represent desire and the danger of succumbing to it, and allude to the mythical story that Shiva mastered the effect of the poison of temptation by keeping it in his throat, preventing it from reaching both body and mind. The representation of the Lingam and the Yoni together symbolises the duality of immanent reality and transcendent potency, the transcendental source of all that exists. The piece has a yellow patina, due to the fact that it has been smeared with turmeric, a plant considered sacred, whose rhizome represents the goddess.
A group of five various table lamps to include one in the Oriental style with an aubergine-coloured glaze; and a turned Italian alabaster table lamp (5)All in need of re-wiring. The aubergine glazed lamp in reasonable condition with some oxidisation. White ground glazed Chinese-style table lamp with the wooden base damaged. The alabaster lamp chipped. Further minor marks.
