Lot 160

A GILT METAL AND CUT GLASS FIVE BRANCH, TEN LIGHT 'COLZA' CHANDELIER MID 19TH CENTURY AND LATER CONVERTED 35cm high (excluding hanging element), approximately 113cm diameter including lights The colza or 'Argand' lamp had been developed by the Swiss chemist Aimé Argand working in France circa 1780-1784 and used a burner within concentric tubes to allow a double current of air to be drawn through the wick- resulting in greater size and brightness of light cast. The lights utilised vegetable or Sperm whale oil gravity fed from a reservoir mounted above the burners/lights. Although this was a problem for table lights, where the reservoir necessarily occluded the light casting a shadow into the room, it proved to be more useful for chandeliers.
