A very special temple lamp from Nepal with dragons supporting the oil dish. Lamps like this are found in many Hindu temples, especially in Kathmandu, hanging in the eaves of the first floor of a pagoda. Butter oil is put in the dish every day and a taper is lit. 28 x 14cm. Late 19th or early 20th c. Notes: Every time we visit Kathmandu, and it is many, we follow this routine. The first thing we do when we arrive is climb the many hundreds of steps to visit the stupa Swaybunath. The steps are steep, especially the last 40 or so, the unaccustomed high altitude takes your breath away. After walking round the stupa, and taking in the view of the whole Kathmandu valley, we visit the small Buddhist monastery in the corner to listen to the monks chant.
Wayan kulit, shadow puppet from Bali. The silver paint on the face is to shine when lit by an oil lamp. 75 x 20cm. Mid 20th c. Notes: Wayan kulit, shadow puppet theatre, is Bali's most complex and sacred art form. It is a traditional medium of moral and spiritual instruction, and it also wonderfully entertaining. An oil lamp is hung behind a screen of stretched cloth. A single puppeteer, dalang, manipulates all the puppets, often many at one time, speaking in a myriad of voices and several different languages while conducting a small ensemble of gamelan musicians at the same time.
