Crimean War. A historical Crimean War pair to Private J Kneller, Royal Welsh Fusiliers who was wounded in the trenches of Sebastapol subsequently losing an eye, during his time at Scutari Hospital he would regularly see Florence Nightingale with her lantern doing the ward rounds at night, later in life the frail veteran stood over Florence Nightingales grave at her funeral and was the only Crimea Veteran to attend the funeral, this being photographed and extensively documented Crimea 1854-56, 1 clasp Sebastopol (4614 Pte. J. Kneller. 23/Foot.), contemporarily engraved in small serif capitals, Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue with later replaced suspension (4614 Pte J. Kneller. 23 Foot), engraved in sloping san serif capitals, very fine and both toned, with a regimental badge applied to a black silk riband (mourning perhaps), also included in the collection are several original photographs showing the recipient at the graveside of Florence Nightingale in 1910 plus another titled 'R.W.F. Crimean Survivor' showing Kneller seated wearing his medals amongst WWI soldiers dated 1914, newspaper articles from both 1910 and 2010 (covering the story of Kneller at the graveside of Nightingale), original letters and other itemsQty: (2)Footnote: Provenance: Jim Bullock (1930-2019), Romsey. Private John Kneller was born in King's Somborne in 1829, he served during the Crimean War with the 23rd Foot, he resided in Romsey, Hampshire, and as a veteran was regularly seen proudly wearing his medals and also a small Gold Medal which he received from London with Florence Nightingales name on the other side. The medal was in virtue for being the only Crimean veteran who attended the funeral of Florence Nightingale at East Wellow on 20 August 1910. Under the porch of the church stood a Crimean veteran, 84 years old, feeble and one-eyed. Private John Kneller, of the 23rd Foot (now the Royal Welch Fusiliers), lost his eye in the trenches before Sebastopol, and as he lay for three months in the hospital at Scutari he often saw Florence Nightingale carrying her lantern on nightly visits on to the place. The story was covered in the Daily Mirror on 22 August 1910 headlined 'Florence Nightingale laid to rest in a Wiltshires Village: Crimean veteran's last tribute to the "Lady with the Lamp."

The Fresnel lens from the Little Ross island lighthouse, Galloway, Scotland, comprising 7 substantial glass panels each with steel frame, 80 x 39cm, contained in two wooden packing crates, 24cm high x 90cm wide x 48cm deep, plus four large Siemens Projector Lamp bulbs each in original card packagingQty: (1)Footnote: Provenance: acquired from Hewitt's estate by David R. Wilson (1926-2020), bookseller and secretary of the British Trust for Ornithology. The Little Ross Lighthouse was built in 1843 and automated in 1961 and remains in private hands. David Wilson is thought to have acquired them from the Northern Lighthouse Board in the late 1960s, labels are attached to the crates.

A Victorian pink glass oil lamp with gilt brass fittings and etched glass shade, height 54cm.Condition:- crack down the length of the glass shade, both handles slightly loose, chip to bottom rim of glass funnel, general wear overall through age and use, no other sign of any major damage or repair.
