Lot 834

James Loder of Bath (1784-1860) ``Antony Robert Thornhill Esq RE on Africanus, by Scaler`` Signed, dated 1834 and inscribed, oil on canvas, 58cm by 74.5cm Glue lined, cleaned, conserved and varnished, possibly in the 1930/40s. It has been re-inscribed and dated, also inscribed `Bought by Countess of Yarborough at Kinveachy in Inverness-shire`. Some damage through the horse`s legs and through the vegetation and bushes, this is probably 4in long. It has been filled and reasonably well restored but can clearly be seen at certain angles and under UV lamp. Further areas of discoloured restoration in the foreground and around the signature in the lower right corner, however, the horse and the gentleman appear to be in fairly good condition with fine delicately applied brushwork, some scuff marks and splashes of dirt can clearly be seen in the sky. The lower left corner around the inscription` Africanus` the word `fold` can clearly be seen but the rest of the description is missing as there has been further damage and rather crude restoration applied to this corner. General dirt and discoloured varnish across the surface and contained within a good quality early 19th century carved giltwood and plaster frame, the frame decorated with foliate scrolls and flowers, a section of the carving is missing in the top right corner, and the gilding is somewhat rubbed in places (260213)
