MUKERJI DHAN GOPAL: (1890-1936) Indian-born American writer of children’s literature, regarded as the first popular Indian writer in English. Mukerji committed suicide in New York at the young age of 46. Autograph statement, unsigned, one page, oblong 8vo, n.p., 12th October 1928. The head of the page is titled Maxims of Life of the Authors of the whole world in the hand of a researcher and immediately beneath Mukerji has penned eight lines of text in his hand, in full, ‘Like an eagle never lost in its flight, like a lion not trembling before the least sounds, like the wind never caught in the net, wander alone. Like a lamp unto yourself work out your deliverance with diligence singly, individually – alone’. Rare. VG
DAVIS BETTE: (1908-1989) American actress, Academy Award winner. An excellent vintage signed and inscribed 7 x 9.5 photograph of Davis standing in a three-quarter length pose alongside a distressed wooden cabinet upon which appear a table lamp and small pile of books including a copy of Tales from the Arabian Nights. Signed by Davis in dark fountain pen ink to a light area of the image. Double matted in dark and pale brown and attractively framed and glazed to an overall size of 15 x 17. VG
