Lactantius (Lucius Caecilius Firminianus) Three leaves from a manuscript of De opificio Dei, manuscript on parchment, in Latin, single column, 41 lines, written in an Italian humanist hand, capitals painted in blue, a few minor tears and losses especially in gutter, minor holes affecting one or two letters of text, script erased to verso (probably from glue) but legible under UV lamp, 4to, 260 x 193/198mm., Italy, 15th century.⁂ These leaves contain large portions from chapters 5, 9, and 10 of De opificio Dei (The Workmanship of God) by the early Christian author Lucius Caecilius Lactantius (240-320 AD). Albeit re-used in a binding and hence somewhat damaged, these leaves still bear witness to the beauty of the dismembered humanistic manuscript from which they come, written in an elegant Italian hand on parchment, which was originally fine and white.

Chinese 'Deco' carpet, Tianjin, north west China, circa 1930s, 14ft. 6in. X 11ft. 1in. 4.42m. x 3.38m. Some wear in places with white warp threads showing through; a few surface marks. The mauve field faded to a beige/grey with central dark blue floral spray; wide deep yellow main border with vase of flowers in opposing corners; flowers, foliage and hanging lamp in one corner; butterflies in the opposite corner; the border with flowers, butterflies and buddhist emblems. The term 'Deco' in relation to Tianjin carpets of the 1930s refers not so much to the design but more to a very distinctive palette. Bright palette; robust handle.

Oil lamp, the clear glass reservoir on brass and copper reeded knopped column, with etched yellow globular glass shade, 67cm high. Provenance Rita Tushingham Condition Report. Reservoir good, repair and split to column knop. Column a bit wobbly. Shade generally good. Very slight chip to top rim.
