Brass Oil Lamp On Stand With Decorative Glass Shade.

A North British Railway enamel LAMP TABLET "LADYBANK JCT". From the ECML Fife station 39 miles north of Edinburgh, and still a junction for the single-line Perth route via Newburgh. The station opened in 1847. Lettered white on black. Rectangular, flangeless, 171/4"x4", vgc. (See Lot 179).

A Cleator & Workington Junction Railway corrugated Messengers Patent 3-aspect HANDLAMP. The body bears two brass plates - "C&WJ Ry. 24" (in early serif style); "Messengers Patent Corrugated Lamp". Complete with all glasses; vessel; burner and reflector. In fine, original condition (repairs to the lens bezel). A rare lamp indeed. The C&WJR opened in 1879 to operate the line from Cleator to Workington, and branches. It was worked jointly by the Furness and LNWR from 1887, and was incorporated into the LMS in 1923.

A GN/LNW Joint 3-aspect (GNR pattern) large HANDLAMP. The body, stamped "GNR 9066", bears two brass plates lettered "Great Northern Railway Company LONG CLAWSON No.3" and "GN&L& NW Joint Lines". The reducing-cone is also stamped "GNR 9066", and additionally bears an oval brass plate "Thomas Knight & Co. Highgate Works, Birmingham". Integral vessel; brass/ceramic burner; reflector, double pie-crust top and all glasses. A very rare lamp in fine original condition. Long Clawson station, on the Newark - Melton Mowbray line, opened in 1879; was renamed "Long Clawson and Hose" in 1884, and closed in 1953.

A Pullman coach brass table lamp in the ornate Arcadian style, clearly stamped "HIBERNIA" and with its original celluloid shade (a split down one seam). The flex curtailed. Hibernia was a 12-wheeled Kitchen car built in 1914 by Cravens. It was used extensively on Southern lines, principally London-Dover/Folkestone and racecourse specials. The interior was described as a contemporary 'Adams' style with French influence. It was rebuilt as a composite in 1933, and again as a first class car in 1950. Withdrawn from service in October 1960 after use on the "Bournemouth Belle", it became "Holiday Coach P46" in the south of England, and was dismantled about 1968. The lamp is in fine original condition. Note Lamps with original celluloid shades should not be lit; they are extremely flammable!

A Pullman coach brass table lamp with its original satin silver plating, clearly stamped "CAR No. 86", and bearing a modern shade. Car 86 was a parlour car built specially for the "Brighton Belle" (formerly "Southern Belle") in 1932. It was formed in Unit 2051 with cars "Doris" (See Lot 43) and "Hazel". It had an unusual interior with floral marquetry and all the metalwork finished in satin silver. It was withdrawn in 1972, and is preserved by VSOE pending possible restoration. This lamp, with its original silver finish, is rare as most "Brighton Belle" lamps have been stripped to reveal the brass finish.

A Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway copper station lamp-case with its original black on white lamp glass "TYDD", and interior vessel (embossed "LMS"); brass Duplex burner, and glass funnel. The case has four sloping sides and is of the style that sat in a basket on a post. Complete and unrestored (the top cap loose). Tydd station, between Sutton Bridge and Wisbech, opened in 1866 and closed in 1959.

A GWR pre-grouping glass LAMP TABLET "DAWLISH WARREN" etched in black into the white glass. In its original wooden frame, 191/2"x61/2", and complete with its metal hanging brackets. In fine original condition. An exceedingly rare item, pre-dating the enamel signs. Dawlish Warren, on the GWR Devon main line, between Exeter and Newton Abbot, opened in 1912 (to replace an earlier station built nearby as "Warren Halt" in 1905).

A North Eastern Railway station lamp case with its original blue lamp glass tablet "WARTHILL". This is the four sloping sides style that fitted into a wall lamp bracket. Four glazed panels (the rear one cracked), original type vessel; brass burner, and glass funnel. 29" tall. Repainted. Warthill station, on the York-Market Weighton line, opened as "Stockton" in 1847; was renamed "Stockton Forest" in 1867; "Stockton-on-Forest" in 1870; "Warthill" in 1872, and closed in 1959. Warthill was the former terminus of the Sand Hutton Light Railway, and the location of Britain's first lifting level crossing barriers on a passenger line.

A Swansea & Mumbles Railway (could be Shropshire & Montgomery Railway) 3-aspect HANDLAMP, the body embossed "SMR". The reducing-cone bears a large oval brass maker's plate "Linley & Co 1905 Patentees & Manufacturers London & Birmingham". With its original fore & aft vessel with a brass plate underneath stamped "SMR"; brass/ceramic burner; reflector, and all glasses. In fine condition, and partially repainted. A rare lamp indeed. The Swansea & Mumbles Railway was renamed from the Oystermouth Railway in 1879, and closed in 1960.

This is the style of lamp-case that fitted into a wall bracket. It has four sloping glazed sides; and a scalloped chimney-cap (slightly bent). No interior vessel. 29" tall and in good, original condition. Tumby Woodside station, between Coningsby and New Bolingbroke on the Woodhall Junction to Bellwater Junction (Boston-Louth) line, opened in 1913 and closed in 1970.

A pair of Great Northern Railway brass lamps, both with Duplex brass burners and glass funnels, and both from Louth in Lincolnshire. A free-standing table lamp, and a signalbox lamp brass-plated "LOUTH" of the style that fitted in a hanging-loop. Both vgc and polished. A fine pair. Louth was a major junction station on the Boston-Grimsby line; it opened in 1848 and closed in 1980 (see Lot 303).

Complete with vessel; "Reform Patent" brass/ceramic burner; reflector; wide brass lens bezel, and all glasses. In fine original condition. A very rare lamp indeed.

A Caledonian Railway buffer-stop (or possibly tail) lamp from Glasgow Central Station. Stamped "Caledonian" on the top, it is stamped "G.C.28" on the side. With a large red brass-rimmed bullseye lens (damaged) two small clear side bullseye lenses; vessel; burner; top handle and back bracket. Some wear and dents but a rare lamp.

A Midland & Great Northern Joint Railway (GNR pattern) small signal lamp-case displaying the oval brass "Great Northern Railway No.5949" badge on the chimney, and a "Sutt.Bge.Relief" brass plate on the collar. The brass hinge is stamped "GNR". Repainted. Inside is its interior lamp, also stamped "GNR", and in original condition. 18" tall including the top handle. Sutton Bridge station, on the King's Lynn-Spalding line, and junction for the line to Wisbech, opened in 1866 and closed in 1959.

A LNER Goods Department HANDLAMP (GNR pattern). This unusual style of lamp, thought to have been used to read wagon labels, is stamped "LNER" on the reducing-cone and body, and bears a large brass rectangular plate lettered "London & North Eastern Railway BOSTON GDS.48". Complete with its original LNER (stamped) vessel; LNER (stamped) brass/ceramic burner; reflector and large front lens. In fine, original condition. Boston station, Lincolnshire, opened in 1848.

From the ex SECR station, on the Maidstone-Sevenoaks line, opened as "Wrotham And Borough Green" in 1874; renamed "Borough Green and Wrotham" in 1862; "Wrotham and Borough Green" again in 1962. Lettered black on white (unusually) and in its original wooden frame. 18"x61/2". In fine, undamaged, original condition.

A Great Northern Railway signal lamp. The case bears the oval brass "Great Northern Railway No.27764" plate on the chimney, and brass plates "ST. MARYS" and "SPARE" on the collar. Complete with its interior lamp also plated "ST MARYS" and a brass plate "360.SD". All in good, original condition. From a location on the Holme (ECML) to Somersham (St Ives-March line) line. St Mary's station opened in 1863 and closed in 1947.
