Theo Gorst Microsoft Employee of the Year, 2021 Gouache on Wood Signed on verso 15 x 10cm (5¾ x 3¾ in.) Theo Gorst is a self-taught artist living and working in Hastings, originally from Suffolk. Using found wood- from skips and leaning against lamp posts- Gorst reclaims items that have been discarded and incorporates them into his art. His dreamlike paintings reference folk art and surrealism, taking influence from painters such as Ken Kiff, Mark Tennant and Peter Blake. Usually painting from photographs, he reinterprets them with humour to express, through new compositions, everyday absurdities. Theo has done lots of work with musicians, designing album covers and numerous posters for gigs and happenings. He currently sells work privately and takes commissions. About the Postcard Microsoft Employee of the Year juxtaposes aesthetics of propaganda posters with more meaningless phrases in public consciousness. The man in the painting is taken from a photograph of a Mexican mortician, adding to the surreal humour created by pairing this unrelated imagery. Gouache on Found Wood from a building site in Hastings.
