Lot 1213

A superbly detailed model of a horse drawn canal barge/Narrow Boat. Named Tudor Rose of the AWA Langrish Canal Carriers registered at Shoreham in Kent. The model measures 96cm with a beam of 6cm. Fitted with a large rudder with the bargeman at the tiller. His sleeping quarters with chimney stack, pots, mops and accoutrements’ to the roof, his small dog by his feet. A tent style weather proof canvas cover to keep perishable goods out of the weather, plus an open area (canvas covers are rolled to one side) to contain other goods including an oil drum, boxes etc. It is also fitted with a railway style lamp to the fore with rope fender. Painted in black and red and decorated with canal art. Complete with a decorated wooden stand 21cm. VGC See Plate.28. Note: This model, barge No.1 is a typical example of the style of haulage craft used from 1740-1940. These boats were used on the British canal systems for transporting coal, wheat, indeed all manner of goods from producer to the retailer/consumer. These and the later motorised examples were a common sight around the canal network, but as progress dictates goods could be delivered more quickly and efficiently by rail and road, thus all were gradually made redundant. Some still survive today as homes and pleasure craft.
