Glasgow No. 1092 9½ x 11½ with zinc liners59cm.; 23ins high by 105cm.; 41½ins longWalter Macfarlane and Co, also known as the Saracen Foundry, was the most important manufacturer of ornamental ironwork in Scotland. Founded in Glasgow by Walter Macfarlane I (1817-85), the firm opened its first premises in 1850, in Saracen Lane, behind the Saracen Head Inn, in the Gallowgate. They specialized in the production of drinking fountains, bandstands, lamp standards, pre-fabricated buildings and architectural crestings and ornament.
