ATTRIBUTED TO BENEDETTO BOSCHETTI (ITALIAN, 1820-1870), A MODEL OF A ROMAN OIL LAMP IN ROSSO ANTICO MARBLE MID 19TH CENTURY 11cm high, 17cm wide Provenance: The Simon Neal Collection The quality of this model of a Roman oil lamp, which appears in the shape of a satyr's head, is indicative that it was likely made by the workshop of Benedetto Boschetti (1820 - 1870). Boschetti was perhaps the most famous sculptor making small scale models in coloured marbles, that were based on the antique prototypes, for the Grand Tour market in Rome, during the mid-19th century. Indeed, in his well-respected Guide to the Studios in Rome, written for the Grand Tourists, Francesco Saverio Bonfigli described Benedetto Boschetti's bottega as "conspicuous for its great variety of marble works, bronzes, candelabras, table tops, etc. besides a rich collection of the best mosaics and shell engravings". Condition Report: Surface is slightly dirty from atmosphere and handling, very small edge marks- there are two lighter surface patches to base of body either side of stem support- quite what this is? It may be a historic restoration- or at least repining to connect the 2 elements and ensure greater stability?Black plinth with chips to underside of front edgePlease see additional images which form part of this condition reportCondition Report Disclaimer
