Ca. AD 200 - 300. A terracotta oil lamp with a rounded body and a central relief depicting a man in a short toga. He is holding a small round object in his right hand, possibly an apple. There is a double raised ridge around the design with an intricate swirl pattern around the body of the lamp. Size: L:125mm / W:80mm ; 145g Provenance: Property of a central London gallery; acquired on the European art market; formerly private Dutch collection, collected between 1960s-1980s.
Ca. AD 1100 - 1200. A bronze ewer with an inverted pyriform body, resting on a low foot. It is adorned with a mouth modelled in the shape of an oil lamp, which elegantly complements the long channelled spout for pouring. Two protruding hoops attached to the sides of the mouth add an extra decorative touch to the piece, while the elaborately shaped handle serves as a comfortable thumb rest. The spout of this ewer is decorated with intricate arabesques, while a band of ornamental design runs around the base. Size: L:200mm / W:130mm ; 500g Provenance: Private London collection of Early Islamic Art - M.A.; formerly acquired on the UK art market since the 1980s. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter. Ca. AD 300 - 400. A mould-made pottery lamp with a deep red colour, except around the nozzle where it has darkened from use. It has a sunken central disc, two pour holes on either side of the central design, an unpierced lug handle, and double spouts. The imagery on this lamp is known as a Chi-Rho, one of the earliest forms of Christogram. Size: L:170mm / W:40mm ; 380g Provenance: Property of a London gallery; formerly Ex. The plot follows a chemist Dr Scholz, who works for IG Farben, a company supplying both Nazi Germany and the Allies with chemical weapons. Despite realising the gas he develops is used for atrocities, he remains silent for fear of losing his job. After the war, the company is largely shielded from accountability by its American connections. Scholz, now a communist, exposes the company's crimes and warns of future plans.
