A late 19th/early 20th century Venetian painted carved wooden BlackamoorModelled as a gondolier standing on the prow of the gondola; together with another Blackamoor, mounted on a stepped columnar base. The former 59 cm high. (2) CONDITION REPORTS: Some paint wear/loss, some chips and losses, some restorations, gondoliers pole possibly replaced, finial later. The former with lamp platform drilled and loose, the latter with metal lamp fixing above cornucopia, general wear.
9th-12th century AD. A hollow-cast bronze vessel with stem and conical foot, three radiating D-shaped nozzles, central filler hole, three integral loops for attachment of suspension chain attached to a single ring. 299 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Property of a North West London gentleman; formerly with a central London gallery in 1990. During the Seljuk period, the arts were encouraged not only by the sultans but also by orders placed by the emirs and members of wealthy merchant families. Cast bronze vessels intended for everyday use were manufactured and decorated with engravings, reliefs, and openwork. Regarding oil lamps in Islam, the Qu'ran (24:35) cites that: “God is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The parable of His light is, as it were, that of a niche containing a lamp; the lamp is enclosed in glass, the glass shining like a radiant star: a lamp lit from a blessed tree - an olive-tree that is neither of the east nor of the west the oil whereof is so bright that it would well-nigh give light of itself even though fire had not touched it: light upon light! God guides unto His light him that wills to be guided; and to this end God propounds parables unto men, since God alone has full knowledge of all things. Fine condition.

A bronze lamp with conical foot, bulbous body with lateral lion-head lugs and long scooped spout with heart-shaped flange, loop handle with bird above modelled in the round, hinged domed lid with knop handle. 620 grams, 17.5cm (7"). Property of an Essex, UK collector; acquired London art market, 1960s-1980s. Fine condition.
1st millennium AD. A group of objects consisting of a large bronze pin with balustered top and tapering body to a point; a ceramic lamp with round short wick hole, wide shoulders with raised lines for decoration and short lug handle. 86 grams, 8.5-18cm (3 1/4 - 7"). From an important private London collection; formed in the 1970s and 1980s. [2, No Reserve] Fine condition.
Late 2nd-early 3rd century AD. A broad terracotta oil lamp with dimpled discoid base, broad shoulder, short D-shaped nozzle, pierced lug handle; discus with low-relief crouching figure with an amphora. Cf. Bémont, C.
