A MASSIVE PAIR OF TURQUOISE AND CREAM-GLAZED 'BUDDHIST LION' STANDS, MING DYNASTYExpert's note: The zhadou-form vases on the lions' backs at one time probably each supported a large temple lamp, the stands placed on either side of a main altar. Evidence for candles made from whale fat in China dates back to the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC).China, 15th - early 17th century. Each fearsome lion stands foursquare with its head proudly raised and tail flicked upward in an alert expression marked by large bulging eyes and flared nostrils. The rich scrolling mane finely incised and muscular body festooned with an ornate caparison, supporting on its back a zhadou-form vase. The lions covered with a lustrous turquoise glaze with some details picked out in cream. Both lions show fangs, and one bares its teeth.Provenance: From a private collection in Bordeaux, France.Condition: Good condition with expected old wear, weathering and firing irregularities, minor losses with associated old repairs and touchups, one lion with the tail reattached. A GILT FAMILLE ROSE VASE DEPICTING THE EIGHT IMMORTALS, BAXIAN, QIANLONG PERIODChina, 1736-1795. Of square baluster form, supported on a flat foot with a recessed base, the rounded shoulder tapering to a narrow mouth. Finely decorated in iron-red, gilt, and bright enamels with four shaped panels, each enclosing two of the Eight Immortals (baxian), separated by rope designs, with shaped cartouches enclosing alternating lingzhi and floral sprays above and below each panel, all surrounded by finely gilt foliate scroll.Provenance: From a private collection in the United States. Condition: Very good condition with minor old wear, expected firing irregularities, and minor rubbing to gilt and enamels.Weight: 260.9 g Dimensions: Height 18 cm Two immortals standing atop wispy clouds appear on each panel of this vase. Hang Xian plays his iconic flute as the eccentric Zhang Guolao stands below with his fish drum. Turning the vase clockwise, the next scene depicts Lan Caihe holding a basket of flowers next to Li Tieguai, holding his double-gourd calabash bottle and iron crutch. Next, He Xiangu, the only female of the Eight Immortals, holds a lotus flower next to Lu Dongbin, identifiable by his scholar's cap and the scroll in his hand. Following this panel is a scene depicting Zhongli Quan, baring his chest in his typical fashion, speaking with Cao Guojiu.The Baxian (Eight Immortals) are a legendary group of Chinese heroes who fight to vanquish evil. Most of them are said to have been born in the Tang or Song Dynasty. They are revered by the Taoists and are also a popular element in secular Chinese culture. They are said to live on a group of five islands in the Bohai Sea, which includes Mount Penglai. Stories of these immortals were first recorded by the Ming dynasty poet Wu Yuantai. A BRONZE OIL LAMP, HAN DYNASTY, EX MICHAEL GOEDHUISChina, 202 BC-220 AD. Finely cast with a circular drip pan with a straight rim and flattened curved handle, supported on a long shaped stem rising from a circular dish with everted rim.Provenance: Michael Goedhuis, London, United Kingdom, 1998. A private collection in France, acquired from the above. A copy of the original invoice, dated 27 September 1998, confirming the dating above and stating a 'special price' for the present lot of FRF 20,000 or approx. EUR 4,500 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Michael Goedhuis trained as an economist, graduating with an MBA from the Courtauld Institute in Art History. He started a successful career in investment banking in New York and London, only to leave it in 1975 to pursue his passion for art. He joined Jacob Rothschild's Colnaghi Oriental Gallery specializing in Persian, Mughal, and Islamic art. It was here that he published a catalog focused entirely on the subject of post-archaic East Asian bronzes, a first in the field, authored by Ulrich Hausmann in 1989. Major collections were curated and sold by Mr. Goedhuis to numerous institutions including The Rothschild Collection to the Shahbanu of Iran, and the Vever Collection to the Smithsonian Institution. He subsequently expanded his activities to India, Japan, and China, concentrating on important antiquities. Today, Mr. Goedhuis continues to exhibit around the world, including in New York and Maastricht.Condition: Excellent condition, commensurate with age. A GOLD REPOUSSE OIL LAMP, KAMANDALU, JAVA, INDONESIA, 13TH-14TH CENTURYThe baluster body raised on a circular base with ribbed stem, the mouth surmounted by a tall segmented hollow finial decorated with foliate designs and topped by an open bud. The spout modeled as a sinuous dragon with large open mouth showing teeth and fangs, the head adorned with a ruby and the base with glass and garnet beads. The base, shoulder and mouth are decorated with lappet petals beneath beadwork.Provenance: Ex-Collection of The Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. Istvan Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe. Bjorn Wiinblad for Rosenthal, a pair of cabinet plates from the Aladdin & the Magic Lamp series, and a further example, Sinbad the Seafairer, no cracks or chips, each D: 16 cm (3), no apparent losses to paint, slight wear to gilt and surface marks to all plates, one plate appears to have a scrape to under the rim which is visible under UV light, no cracks or visible damages slight pitt marks to rim of one plate but overall good condition. He studied sculpture with Jacques Perrin, a professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris (fine arts school), and with Georges Lemaire. The artist began his career in 1907 and set up his studio at 11 Avenue Franco-Russe, near the Champ de Mars. Thereafter he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français, part of a milieu that included Auguste Rodin, Antoine Bourdelle, and Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux. After the First World War, Cheuret resumed his practice and secured several high-level commissions. His work is imbued with the clean lines of the Art Deco period and also bears the influence of images which began to appear after the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922, and the new language which it introduced into Western arts and crafts. At the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1925, Albert Cheuret rented a stall along the Alexandre III bridge and presented his famous light fixtures in bronze and alabaster, his favourite materials.
