7th-10th century AD. A terracotta slipper-shaped lamp with large filler hole, narrow discuss and channel, chamfered shoulders with raised crescent motifs and script, rounded underside with basal ring, knop handle to the rear. 107 grams, 97mm (3 3/4"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired by his father in the 1970s; thence by descent. Fine condition.
2nd century AD. A bronze lamp in the form of a bull's head, with short curved horns and hairy ears, large nose and round eyes with hollow pupils, possibly once inlaid with silver, the forehead adorned with curls, the nozzle protruding from the mouth, the hoop handle surmounted by a leaf with old repair, and a hinge for the now-missing lid. 645 grams, 15.5cm (6"). From an important Dutch collection, formerly in the H. Schmidtgen Collection, Germany, acquired in the 1980s; formerly in a European collection, acquired on the German art market in the 1960s. Very fine condition with a beautiful dark green patina. Rare.
1st-3rd century AD. A discoid terracotta lamp with short nozzle, loop handle to the rear; the discus with two round holes and standing figure of Eros holding a flaming torch, scrolled foliage to the rim; to the underside, graffito maker's mark 'VVV'. 154 grams, 11.5cm (4 1/2"). Found near York, UK, in the 1980s. Graffiti VVV and VVX were used in Roman York, see excavations at: 1-9 Micklegate, 24-30 Tanner Row and 12-18 Swinegate. Fine condition. A very rare English find.
