A pair of iGuzzini 'Baobob' table lamps of mushroom form, the white acrylic shades over matching bases, h. 60 cm each CONDITION REPORT: Working order not guaranteed, good but one lamp with knock (see illustration) and the other with two small losses to enamelling, currently the auctioneers cannot light the lamps up however this may be due to bulbs- nothing at auction is guaranteed for working order.
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze phallic pendant with running legs and raised tail, loop to tail, foot, back and underside. Property of a Surrey collector; acquired in the early 1970s. Tintinnabula were hung in the doorways of houses and shops, often together with a lamp, as a protection against evil spirits. The name comes from the inclusion of bells that would have hung from suspension loops as seen in this example. They either take the form of grotesque human or semi-divine figures, or, more often, a large phallus with the hind legs of a lion. 71 grams, 93mm (3.5"). Extremely fine condition.
2nd century AD. A discoid terracotta lamp with short nozzle and scrolled shoulders, low-relief erotic scene to the discus. From a large oil lamp collection, Surrey, UK; acquired in the 1990s. Cf. Bémont, C. Lampes en Terre Cuites, Paris, 2007, item GA152. 63 grams, 10.5cm (4"). Fine condition.
Early 1st century AD. A small terracotta lamp with short nozzle and broad scrolled shoulders, three concentric rings to the discus with high-relief image of a Thrax gladiator. 2nd century AD. A terracotta oil lamp with short nozzle and scrolled shoulders, recessed discus with band of radiating lines and central roundel. 2nd century AD. A small terracotta dish with flared foot, shallow bowl, laurel leaves to the curved rim, imitation strap handles. From a large oil lamp collection, Surrey, UK; acquired in the 1990s. Late 1st century AD. A terracotta factory oil lamp with lugs to the shoulder, recessed discus, nozzle with chamfered sides, concentric rings to the underside and 'FORTIS' maker's mark. From a large oil lamp collection, Surrey, UK; acquired in the 1990s. Cf. Bémont, C. Lampes en Terre Cuites, Paris, 2007, item IT107. The 'FORTIS' mark is associated with a producer in northern Italy. 105 grams, 11cm (4 1/4"). Very fine condition.
2nd century AD. A squat terracotta oil lamp with broad nozzle and scrolled shoulders, concentric rings to the discus and low-relief image of of a water-bearer (Aquarius?) emptying a jar into a chalice. From a large oil lamp collection, Surrey, UK; acquired in the 1990s. Cf. Bémont, C. Lampes en Terre Cuites, Paris, 2007, item GA81 for type. 51 grams, 88mm (3 1/2"). Fine condition.
Later 1st-early 2nd century AD. A squat terracotta oil lamp with loop handle to the rear, short nozzle with scrolled shoulders, concentric rings to the discus enclosing a high-relief leaping bull.
