Ca. AD 500 - 600.A unique bronze oil lamp in the shape of a soldier's boot. The oil lamp has an elegant and slender form, with a protruding discoid foot, a boot-shaped body with a keeled central section, and a sloping shoulder. The boot is made up of a base with short nails, indicating it was likely to be for use in snow or mud. The top part of the shoe displays crossed laces at the front, extending to the top of the boot. Two bronze rings accommodate two chains for hanging the lamp. The entire composition has developed layered speckles of green and brown patina. Ca. AD 1 - 300.A mould-made ceramic oil lamp with a circular body and a sunken tondo, surrounded by concentric grooves. The central discus features a raised relief depicting an erotic scene, with two lovers positioned on a bed; the woman reclines while her partner kneels, lifting her legs. The nozzle is short and rounded, designed with a wide wick hole, and is complemented by a pair of volutes on either side. Located in the lower part of the discus is a filling hole. The lamp features an elegant handle made of two tendrils that curl upwards and meet at a floral motif over the body of the vessel. The tripod has a rounded disc beneath the lamp to catch any dripping oil. 1927 Raleigh 248cc. Registration number OP 5370. Frame number J10406. Engine number 10364.Sold with the V5C.Although known today mainly for its bicycle output, the Raleigh company was once one of the leading pioneers of the British motorcycle industry, building motorcycles first from 1899 to 1905 and then again from 1919 to 1933.The Model 14 was typical of Raleigh’s output, and of affordable motorcycling generally, during the Vintage years. Built from 1925 to 1927, the 248cc single-cylinder SV four stroke engine and three-speed Sturmey-Archer gearbox made for a bike which, by the standards of the day, was conventional, straightforward, easy to ride and economical. OP has been owned by our vendor for eight years and regularly ridden, a proper oily rag machine. The acetylene lamp system is fully functional and a bulb horn is fitted.

1924 Royal Enfield Model 201, 225cc. Registration number BS 9933 (non transferrable). Frame number 7823. Engine number E7855 (the V5C states E2038, see text).Sold with the V5C.The Redditch based Royal Enfield firm entered the motorcycle business as early as 1898. In the years before WW I the company was very successful with light Motosacoche-engined V twins. These machines were equipped with the famous Enfield two-speed gear, involving twin primary chains. Directly after the Great War Enfield marketed two successful models: the light 2¼ HP two stroke and the V-twin sidecar machine. Actually the little two stroke had already been presented to the public at the end of 1914, but due to the war few machines were made before 1919. The simple, cheap and reliable Model 201 would be part of the Enfield range up to 1930, albeit with regular updates. The machine’s frame is remarkable in that the top rail is set at an angle down from the headstock to the saddle tube. This gives a low saddle position without the necessity to bend (and weaken) the top tube. BS has been owned by our vendor for 19 years. About ten years ago he swapped the engine to the current one, he has nearly finished rebuilding it and it is available by separate negotiation. In regular use the acetylene lamp system is fully operational. Also of note is the modern bicycle rear disc brake to aid slowing down, the front is bicycle type which does not retard the machine very well.

Ca. AD 1 - 300.A collection of three terracotta oil lamps, each with moulded decoration. The first two on the right, classified as Loeschcke Type VIII, have broadly rounded bodies tapering to short nozzles, each with a raised circular rim enclosing a sunken discus. The rightmost lamp features a kantharos with two birds perched on its handles, framed by a border of small, evenly spaced dots. The central lamp depicts the head of Helios with eight petal-like rays extending outward. The leftmost lamp, attributed to Loeschcke Type IV or Bussière Type B, has a broad circular body and a rounded nozzle flanked by two volutes. The recessed cavity follows the form of a Hayes Type IIA lamp, with a central discus featuring a relief of a palm tree with a slender trunk and symmetrically arranged fronds. Ca. AD 200 - 300.A mouldmade terracotta oil lamp, Loeschcke Type VIII, with a rounded body tapering into a short nozzle. The raised circular rim encloses the discus, which depicts Harpocrates seated on a ram, holding a cornucopia in his left hand. A garland-like motif runs along the edge of the scene.
