1st century A.D. A terracotta oil lamp composed of a circular discus, tapering sidewalls, volute nozzle embellished with scrolls, moulded acanthus leaves to the discus with central filling hole; 'Clodivs / fecit' written into the base when wet. See Bussière, J., Lindros Wohl, B., Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 2017, p.75, no.94, for the type. 85 grams, 11.1 cm wide (4 3/8 in.). Found Chancery Lane, London, UK, in 1865. From a 19th century collection and latterly in a London collection. Accompanied by a small original handwritten card: 'Under the new building in Chancery Lane AD 1865'. The lamp belongs to the Loeschcke type IB nozzle form (Bailey type A group III), variant C (Bussière, Lindros Wohl, 2017, fig.1) and it is with all probability of the Augustean-Tiberian period, mainly produced in North Africa, by the workshop of a certain Clodius. These kind of lamps were mould made in a plaster mould.
Late 2nd century A.D. A terracotta oil lamp composed of a circular discus with tapering sidewall, D-shaped nozzle with sub-circular filling hole, series of raised roundels to discus, pellets within arcading to the shoulder. See Bussière, J., Lindros Wohl, B., Ancient Lamps in the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, 2017, p.258, no.368, for the type. 74 grams, 10.5 cm wide (4 1/8 in.). Found Colchester, Essex, UK, in the 1800s. From a 19th century collection and latterly in a London collection. Accompanied by a small original handwritten card: 'Found in second bra-(?) at Colchester'. Loeschcke type VIII is characterised by a circular body and short rounded nozzle, the early examples of which go back to Claudian times. It experienced a tremendous floruit at the end of the 1st century A.D. and during the next two centuries, with variants around the Roman provinces. This variant is characterised by closely spaced tongues on the shoulder, separated from the discus by a series of circular grooves.
2nd century B.C.-1st century A.D. A terracotta oil lamp formed as a male bust with stern expression, the handle formed with a foliage crest, oval nozzle; circular filling hole to the crown of the head. See Djuric, S., Ancient Lamps from Mediterranean, Toronto, 1995, no.NA-76, for the type. 53 grams, 11.3 cm wide (4 1/2 in.). Found Rome, Italy, before 1859. From a 19th century collection and latterly in a London collection. Accompanied by a small original handwritten card: 'Lico. Brought Rome by AFB. 1858.' 'Plastic' lamps with figurines first appear in the Hellenistic period, possibly originating in Athens. Found in all parts of the Mediterranean basin, they were particularly popular during the 1st and 2nd centuries A.D. Some of them, depicting satyrs or Silenus, have handles shaped like palm leaves. This raised forehead was part of a vertical bar making it a so-called boot-shaped lamp.

A 19TH CENTURY SILVER PLATED OIL LAMP the Adam style silvered base with leaf decoration and rams heads, clear cut glass reservoir and later twisted green glass shade72cm overall The shade is in good condition with no chips or cracks, the chimney is in good condition, the reservoir is also in good condtion with no drill holes, the silver plated step has no dents, drill holes or solder marks. The shade is reproduction.
