A desk top timepieceModelled as a paraffin lamp incorporating a white enamel dial with Arabic numerals opposing a thermometer, flanked with a further temperature dial and a hygrometer dial and surmounted with an inset compass. 24 cm high. CONDITION REPORTS: Generally good, expected wear, some rubbing to case, hygrometer and second thermometer dial modern.
A Chinese porcelain moon flaskOf typical form, decorated with a hunting party opposing exotic birds amongst floral sprays, red painted four character seal mark to base, converted as a lamp. 60.5 cm high overall. CONDITION REPORTS: Generally good condition, expected wear, neck ground down, some rubbing to enamels, some rubbing to gilding, restoration to handles.
1st-2nd century AD. A bronze oil lamp in the form of an African head, eyes inlaid with silver, nozzle coming out of open mouth; bands of curled hair, oil filling hole to the top with hinged cover; to the back a ring handle with thumb guard to the top; oval pedestal base. 277 grams, 12cm (4 3/4"). Property of a North West London lady; from her family collection since before 2000. Very fine condition.
1st century AD. A terracotta oil lamp with flat base, dished discus with concentric rings to the rim, short nozzle with volute scroll, high-relief profile cockerel motif and vent. Cf. Bémont, C. Lampes en Terre Cuites, Paris, 2007, item GA22.61 grams, 97mm (4"). Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980. Fine condition, hole to underside.
1st-2nd century AD. A terracotta oil lamp with broad nozzle, discus with raised rim, three radiating lugs to the shoulder, raised factory mark to the underside 'NAMARI'. Cf. Bémont, C. Lampes en Terre Cuites, Paris, 2007, item GA288 for type.41 grams, 84mm (3 1/4"). From an important London collection, acquired in the 1990s. Fine condition.
2nd century AD. A ceramic oil lamp, the discus decorated with a stylised dolphin; a pair of ringlets above nozzle and either side of handle, pierced lug handle at the rear; maker's mark to base in form of a sandal imprint. 40 grams, 90mm (3 1/2"). Property of a Sussex gentleman; acquired from Ancient Art, London, UK. Fine condition.
