A CHINESE IMPERIAL PORCELAIN ALTAR VASE QIANLONG 1736-95 With an ovoid body and cylindrical knopped neck raised on a wide domed foot, finely enamelled in iron-red with lotus sprays above a band of stiff leaves, the neck with a key fret border, 22.2cm. Provenance: an English private collection, purchased in Sussex in the 1990s. Cf. A RARE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE INSCRIBED 'BIRTHDAY' DISH DATED 1594 Painted with two phoenix against a ground of peony flowerheads and scrolling leaves arranged around a central roundel with a single character ri, the reverse with three lion dogs and brocade balls to the cavetto and with seven lines of calligraphy to the base, 30.4cm. The inscription to the base says that is was commissioned by Mrs Xiong. It celebrates their three sons, the eldest of whom married into the Imperial House. It goes on to say that it was made in the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory on an auspicious day in the fourth moon of the twenty second year of the reign of the Emperor Wanli of the Great Ming Dynasty, which corresponds to February / March 1594. Kildare, by direction of Sir Anthony Weldon, Bart, by Messrs. Jackson Stops & Joyce. Lot 545 was described as a 'Very important dinner and desert service of Oriental porcelain ... 147 pieces. Finely painted in enamel colours ... depicting domestic life, amusements and occupations of the Chinese.' The full description is located on page 21 of the 1934 catalogue, and there is a photograph of part of Lot 545 on the facing page. The service features a design loosely known as 'Rockefeller pattern' or ‘Palace’ ware. This is not an 18th century name, but reflects the fact that a very handsome and extensive service of this pattern was once owned by the distinguished American collector John D Rockefeller Jnr. Americans also call similar wares 'Palace ware' which was a term used by the generation of buyers in New York, Boston and Philadelphia in the 1930s. For similar examples see, Ronald W.
