A CHINESE IMPERIAL PORCELAIN ALTAR VASE QIANLONG 1736-95 With an ovoid body and cylindrical knopped neck raised on a wide domed foot, finely enamelled in iron-red with lotus sprays above a band of stiff leaves, the neck with a key fret border, 22.2cm. Provenance: an English private collection, purchased in Sussex in the 1990s. Cf. A similar altar vase can be seen in a painting by Giuseppe Castiglione in The National Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrating the Emperor Qianlong beneath trees and beside a table with a number of other treasures; see Palastmuseum Peking Schätze aus der Verbotenen Stadt, Berlin, 1985, no.41, pl.24. A PAIR OF CHINESE YELLOW-GROUND 'DRAGON' BOWLS GUANGXU 1875-1908 Each decorated with two incised dragons chasing pearls amidst fire wisps and clouds above stylised waves in green against a yellow ground, the base with a four character mark in underglaze blue which reads qing hua zhenpin (precious object of splendour) indicating it was made for the use of a first rank concubine, 16.2cm. A RARE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE INSCRIBED 'BIRTHDAY' DISH DATED 1594 Painted with two phoenix against a ground of peony flowerheads and scrolling leaves arranged around a central roundel with a single character ri, the reverse with three lion dogs and brocade balls to the cavetto and with seven lines of calligraphy to the base, 30.4cm. The inscription to the base says that is was commissioned by Mrs Xiong. It celebrates their three sons, the eldest of whom married into the Imperial House. It goes on to say that it was made in the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory on an auspicious day in the fourth moon of the twenty second year of the reign of the Emperor Wanli of the Great Ming Dynasty, which corresponds to February / March 1594. SHA SONG (19TH/20TH CENTURY) JIN HUI DUI A Chinese fan painting, ink and colour on paper, inscribed and signed with two illegible seals, framed and glazed, 23.5cm x 50cm. Provenance: from an English private collection. Jin hui dui is a form of painting which illustrates fragments of title-slips, notes and newspapers. An attractive Chinese Famille Rose 'Rockefeller' pattern part-service, Qianlong, each piece enamelled with a different central scene of figures at leisure on terraces, in pavilion interiors and in rocky riverscapes, comprising some with violet diaper band and some without, the borders with landscape panels in iron-red and brown on a dense gilt foliate ground, comprising: Fourteen dinner plates, 25cm wide (some chips and extensive wear to gilding on the borders of some plates) Five soup or dessert bowls, 24.5cm wide (some wear to gilding on the borders of four plates and wear throughout) An oval meat dish, with moulded well and standing on two feet, 40.5cm wide (good condition other than minor wear) An oval basket and stand, the basket with arched handles, with violet diaper pattern bands, the basket, 24cm.wide and the stand 27.4cm wide (basket restored and stand in good condition other than minor wear) An oval basket and stand, the basket with scroll handles, 21.5cm wide and the stand 25.8cm wide (basket with handles restored and the stand good other than minor wear) Two circular food warmers, 28cm wide(wear to gilding and one with hair crack and chip to spout) An oval serving dish, 27.2cm wide (in good condition other some kiln grit firing blemishes) An oval two-handled tureen base, 32cm wide (some wear to gilding and cover lacking) (28) Provenance: From a private family collection prior to 1934 and by descent to a lady.This group of wares forms part of a larger service sold in Dublin, 16th October, 1934, lot 545, Catalogue of the valuable contents of Kilmoroney, Athy, Co. Kildare, by direction of Sir Anthony Weldon, Bart, by Messrs. Jackson Stops & Joyce. Lot 545 was described as a 'Very important dinner and desert service of Oriental porcelain ... 147 pieces. Finely painted in enamel colours ... depicting domestic life, amusements and occupations of the Chinese.' The full description is located on page 21 of the 1934 catalogue, and there is a photograph of part of Lot 545 on the facing page. The service features a design loosely known as 'Rockefeller pattern' or ‘Palace’ ware. This is not an 18th century name, but reflects the fact that a very handsome and extensive service of this pattern was once owned by the distinguished American collector John D Rockefeller Jnr. Americans also call similar wares 'Palace ware' which was a term used by the generation of buyers in New York, Boston and Philadelphia in the 1930s. For similar examples see, Ronald W.
