The Earldom of Buchan passed from the Comyns family to the Stewarts (second son of Robert II ), then the Douglas family and next to the Erskines. James Erskine became 6th Earl of Buchan as the second son of John, Earl of Marr, 1st Lord Cardross, KG Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. In 1695 the title passed to the heirs of David 4th Lord Cardross and 9th Earl of Buchan who successfully supported the Hanoverian cause.
