Manfredo Settala, first Italian edition, lacking portrait frontispiece and large folding plate, occasional spotting or light foxing, 20th century vellum-backed decorative boards, [Cicognara 3461 (Latin edition)], 8vo, Tortona, heirs of Eliseo Viola, 1666. sold not subject to return. ⁂ Catalogue of the Wunderkammer of Manfredo Settala, which was bequeathed to the Ambrosiana. It included Chinese printed books on silk and porcelain, mummies, musical instruments, tropical fish and birds of paradise.
A Chinese porcelain deep bowl, in famille rose palette, depicting females in a boat, one female crouched proffering a Lingzhi and verso a kneeling female holding out a Ruyi sceptre towards a dwelling in the clouds, all against a Anhua ground, the interior bowl turquoise glazed, with red Jiaqing (1796-1820) seal mark, and probably of the period, 13 cm diameter, 8.5 cm high (see illustration). CONDITION REPORT: There is a 7 mm x 1 mm horizontal splice to the rim from which issues a very fine 4 cm hairline crack. There is a further 6.5 cm horizontal hairline crack. The remainder of the body appears to be in good order with no further obvious faults. The enamels all appear to be intact. The interior although slightly stained appears to be in good order.
A Chinese famille rose octagonal bowl, 19th century, the interior with blue ground glaze, exterior with panels of Buddhist symbols and flowers between Ruyi head and key borders, the underside glazed turquoise with red stamped Qianlong seal mark and with further collectors engraved mark. 17.5 cm diameter, 7.7 cm high. CONDITION REPORT: The gilding around the rim is partially erased. The interior of the bowl is very worn and at some points is through to the porcelain body. Overall the exterior enamels appear to be in good order and free from any major chips or flaking. The edges all appear to be free from any chips, cracks or restorations. The bowl rings out nicely when lightly tapped.
A Chinese porcelain plate, 20th century, hand painted with a deity in a red robe holding his rosary beads kneeling before a small deity appearing from rock work, with scrambled characters to the left and all within petal shape trellis border, spurious seal mark to the underside. 19 cm diameter. CONDITION REPORT: There is a +/- 13 cm x 1.2 cm section of restoration across the left hand side rim. The seal mark on the back and the calligraphy to the left of the figure at the front appears to be unfinished. Other than these faults the plate is sound.
A pair of Chinese porcelain bowls, late Qing, each decorated with thirteen females each with character marks from the dream of the red chamber, now mounted as inkwells with French bronze mounts cast with leaves and beaded decoration, with gilt bronze exotic dolphin pen rests, all upon a Japanese lacquered panel depicting golden pheasants amongst water and reeds, gilt metal mounted with leaf and berry feet. 38 cm wide, 16 cm high (see illustration).
Two Chinese blue and white snuff bottles, late Qing, one decorated with a watery landscape, rock work and buildings, the other with figures within an interior heightened with enamels, both with artemisia leaves to the underside, 7.5 cm each, a further two Chinese porcelain blue and white snuff bottles and three interior painted glass snuff bottles (7). CONDITION REPORT: All are 20th century or later. There appear to be no post production faults visible. The porcelain baluster snuff bottle with stopper has unfinished decoration around the shoulder.

A Chinese porcelain vase and cover, late 19th century, in famille verte palette, depicting boys at play within a garden landscape, height 22.5 cm a ginger jar, late 19th century, decorated with a figure on horseback, ladies in a chariot and attendants, pseudo four character Qianlong mark, height 20.5 cm, and a further ginger jar and cover with panels of flowering plants, pseudo six character Qianlong mark, height 14 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The lid on the largest jar has been broken in two and restored. There are signs of overspraying on the top and underside. The vase itself appears to be in good order with no obvious chips, cracks or signs of restoration. The enamels are clean with only very minor chips. The vase rings out when lightly tapped. The large ginger jar cover appears to be in good order with no obvious faults, the cover rings out nicely when lightly tapped. The jar itself appears to be free from any obvious chips, cracks or signs of restoration. There are a few surface scratches to the shoulder just to the right of the horses head beneath the collar. The enamels appear to be complete and intact. The vase rings out when lightly tapped. The smallest ginger jar lid has been broken in three pieces and glued. The ginger jar itself appears to be in good decorative order with no signs of any obvious chips, cracks or restoration. The enamels appear to be in good order and complete. The vase rings out when lightly tapped.
A Chinese porcelain vase, 20th century, decorated with a peacock and crane amongst blossoming flowers and two Mandarin ducks all beneath a pine tree, a poem verso, height 42 cm, and a 20th century Chinese vase decorated with a peacock amongst peony and blossom, the reverse with an inscribed poem, height 27.5 cm.
A collection of Chinese Canton enamel wares, 19th century, comprising a large dished plate decorated with auspicious fruits, cash, bats and butterflies, teapot, two large and two small plates, three teacups and saucers. Largest dish diameter 32 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The teapot has small enamel losses throughout but nothing too significant. There are no signs of any obvious chips or restorations. The gilding is rubbed around the handles, rim and spout. There is a pair of scallop moulded teacups and saucers, these are eggshell porcelain. All items ring out when lightly tapped. There is a pair of 19.5 cm diameter side plates, one of which has been broken in two and glued. Both have surface scratches and small enamel losses. There is a pair of 25 cm diameter plates, both have been restored, the undersides have been oversprayed. There is a large 32 cm diameter dished plate, this has a large Y shape hairline crack across the diameter of the foot rim. There are enamel losses to the decoration.
