TWO CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN DISHES FROM THE DIANA CARGO painted in underglaze blue and copper red with the Fledglings and Prunus design and painted with four young birds perched on rockwork and prunus, 28cm diam, c1816 Provenance: The Diana was one of twenty ships owned by Palmer & Co, an important Calcutta agency house, whose extensive interests included banking. The ship with its cargo of 24,000 pieces of mainly blue and white Chinese porcelain foundered in the Straits of Malacca in March 1817. After lying at a depth of 120 feet, the cargo was salvaged and sold at auction by Christie`s in Amsterdam in March 1995. The present dishes were part of lots 842 and 881A in that sale. The red pigment on one dish much darker than that on the other. Both in fine condition

Tiny abrasions around the rim.
