A CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE RECTANGULAR TRAY, SIX CHARACTER JIAQING MARK AND OF THE PERIOD 1796-1820 Painted with a solitary fisherman overlooking a lake in an extensive mountainous landscape, with three fishing boats and small houses amongst pine trees, all bordered by fruiting branches, the exterior with river scenes, 35.3cm x 18.6cm. Provenance: formerly from the collection of Carl-Erik Gadelius (1866-1928), who was head of the Gadelius Company, Japan, 1904-1913. Cf. A CHINESE HARDWOOD SCREEN, 20TH CENTURY Formed in two parts, mounted with a rectangular porcelain plaque, painted with an extensive mountain landscape, with small figures at the water’s edge and in a small boat, an inscription and signature for the artist, the plaque 38.5cm x 25.2cm, 78.5cm x 57.5cm overall. A PAIR OF CHINESE LACQUE BURGAUTE PORCELAIN BOWLS, 18TH CENTURY Lacquered in black to the exterior and inlaid with mother of pearl, each depicting a continuous rocky garden with willow and maple trees, one with a scholar and an attendant carrying a parasol, the other with two scholars in conversation, 9.5cm. A LARGE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE VASE, C.1640 Illustrating a scene from the story of Bing Ji Wen Niu, with a procession walking on a rocky path behind a buffalo, with plantain and pine trees amongst swirling clouds, the shoulder with a band of stylized leaves, 46.3cm. Cf. THREE CHINESE BLUE AND WHITE SHIWAN WARE FIGURES, 18TH CENTURY One depicting a lady with a nursing child, another Shoulao, a peach branch thrown over his shoulder, the third a seated figure of Tudi, together with a famille rose porcelain model of a demon, 24cm max. (4) Provenance: a European private collection, acquired 1965-85.
A PAIR OF CHINESE ARMORIAL FAMILLE ROSE TUREENS AND COVERS, 2ND HALF 18TH CENTURY Painted with sprays of flowering rose dividing the arms of Rumbold impaling Law, all beneath flowering garlands, the handles modelled as twisted rope, 39cm. (4) Cf. D S Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain Vol.I, p.361, M1 and p.366, M3. This is one of three services with the arms of Governor Thomas Rumbold of Madras. He married in 1772 Joanna, daughter of Edmund Law, Bishop of Carlisle, and was in 1779 created a baronet, being both a Director of the Hon. East India Company and an MP. He died in 1791. The baronetcy passed to George Berryman, son of his first marriage who was Consul General in Hamburg.
Chinese inscribed ten-panel table screen, carved by Wu Nanyu (1894-1942) and dated 12th February 1925, each porcelain panel carved with figures in a landscape scene and calligraphic inscription, the ivory panel in the middle carved with an excerpt from an article. One panel is missing. All set within a carved and pierced wooden frame, Republic period, each side panel including frame 44.8 x 11.8cm. PROVENANCE: Lots 108 - 116, from a private lady collector. Information on the screen: The screen was a birthday gift from a Zhong Shimin (1879-1965) the Vice Financial Chief in the Republic period from 1921 -1928 TO "Old Marshal," Zhang Zuolin's (1875-1928) nickname, the warlord of Manchuria. A Chinese white metal mounted small tea pot, early 20th century, the circular blue glazed porcelain body with lotus leaf decoration, the metal mounts with dragon and phoenix motifs, height 7.5 cm, a similar example with a square yellow glazed body and a circular metal tea pot with applied figures, (3).
