A Chinese porcelain guanyin, Republic period (1912-1949), seated wearing a loose robe exposing his chest, covered with a crackled glaze,17cm highProvenance: From Travers Christmas Humphreys QC (15 February 1901-13 April 1983) via his wife's will executor, her goddaughter, and thence by descent.Born in London in 1901, Humphreys followed in his father's footsteps to become a prominent barrister, and was responsible for the prosecution of several controversial cases during the 1940s and 50s, before later becoming a judge at the Old Bailey. A proponent of Buddhism, he wrote a number of works on Mahayana Buddhism, and was probably the best-known British convert of his day. In 1924, he founded what became the London Buddhist Society, which was to have a seminal influence on the growth of the Buddhist tradition in Britain. He was also an enthusiastic advocate of the Oxfordian theory that the works of Shakespeare were, in fact, written by someone else. Baroness Julie von Bodenhausen-Degener (1902-1951) was a German dancer, singer and actress who, after making her film debut in Britain, headed for Hollywood, where she worked under the name 'Luli Deste'. She had spent much of her childhood at Schloss Neubeuern, the Bavarian castle owned by her uncle, Jan von Wendelstadt (1856-1909). Jan was an avid art collector, whose companions were German artists and intellectuals, and it was under his influence that the Schloss became a cultural centre. His interest in art also extended to items from the East, and he took several trips there, bringing back souvenirs of Chinese bronzes, Japanese screens and porcelain, even displaying a large pair of Chinese lion dogs in the castle gardens. A Studio Manasse portrait of Luli (as Baroness Luli von Hohenberg) can be seen HERE as part of the Taussig Collection held by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia. Condition ReportDid not examine outside of he frame. Frame with general wear, knocks and chips to edges. Creasing and cockling throughout with paint losses. Some variation in tone patchiness and unevenness to the blue sky, possible restoration.

Six character mark of Jiajing to base within double circle in underglaze blue. 19.9cm diam.Condition: With visible signs of wear to interior of bowl. Faint hairlines running from rim. 1.5cm hairline running over the foot rim into the base. With bands of floral and key fret decoration around the neck and double ring to base in underglaze blue. 32cm tall.Two chips to the underside of the foot ring. No cracks or signs of repair.
